From brilliant to total rubbish

I don't think I have ever seen a TV drama go downhill so fast. Series 1 was fantastic, series 2 not so good but still OK, this current series is a pile of c**p. No wonder Bill Paterson barely shows his face anymore.

reply

I think the complete oposite. series one was awful. series 2 was good and this series is great. the show is nothing without Justine.

reply

i think the show is brilliant with really imaginative stories. from wat ive heard bill paterson is actually unwell which is why hes never in it. i think the 1st series was really borin compared to this 1 bt there you go, just a matter of opinion isnt it???

reply

The series has changed since series 1 but it is still excellent, roll on series 4!

reply

The only change in the series is that rather than having plots that could be read either way ie; have supernatural or logical conclusions, the plots are now solely supernatural. We've seen ghosts, mythical kabalistic creatures, psychic powers, dream projection and premonition, all in just half of the third season. I understand why the BBC has made such a drastic change in the orientation of the plots (to keep up with the 'Most Haunted' phenomenon), but I think the show has lost it's integrity.

"I am sure that Mr Lucas is doing it only for artistic reasons." JK Rowling on Star Wars prequels.

reply

i think the series have got better. series 1 was boring, series 2 was good and series 3 is brill!! i really like the new characters and the storylines!!! does any1 disagree?!?!

reply

not me, its fantastic, best show ever (apart from Lost lol) it makes me proud to see a great show like this set in glasgow.

reply

i agree! great show!! but what's happened to bill paterson? he hasn't been in series 3 much, last episode he wasn't in at all and you just heard his voice on the phone!! hope he's not leaving!...

reply

I agree, that Series 1 was rubbish. I prefer series 2 and series 3 is just the best, with Craig and Justine up front! We've seen more character interaction and development this series, with interesting storylines. This makes series 3 my favourite so far! Series 1 was really rubbish for me. I could barely keep my eyes open!

reply

ahhh! series one, wasnt it just! I really couldnt keep awake, the episodes were rubbish. I mean I like the character of Douglas, but without Justine & Craig the show is nothing. it just isnt interesting with just him, and his last sidekicks were sort of dull. though Im sure the show also wouldnt be as good without Douglas.

reply

I like all three series. It's changed a lot since the first series but I still enjoy it. And after last night's episode I am very interested to see what direction the show will go in from here.

reply

Neilb has hit the nail on the head. Pandering to the paranormal believer has been the modus operandi this year.

What a waste of a wonderful premise and a good show. The sight of Paul McGann playing Harry Potter in a Glasgow city centre office block was risible!

reply

I also prefer Series 2, because of Justine and Craig, and Series 3 is the best for me, because there is more interaction between the characters, with more character knowledge.

reply

"Neilb has hit the nail on the head. Pandering to the paranormal believer has been the modus operandi this year."

^^^ With shows like Afterlife and Supernatural on ITV to compete with it doesn't surprise me that they'd do that. I don't mind the change to much though, I've still enjoyed series three, well except for the succubi episode. I didn't care too much for that one.

reply

I enjoyed all the episodes. apart from the sleeper one, were they got locked in the university, maybe it was because Craig wasnt in it, maybe it was because it was so far fetched, maybe I just hated the story line, but that one was a waste I felt.

reply

It was probably because Craig wasn't in it! Lol, just joking. Has anybody ever though that maybe there is enough paranormal activity in the show? That there is enough believers and non-believers of the ghousts and ghoulies? That the storylines are believeable, anything could happen and that Sea Of Souls just proves that? I'm happy with the direction the shows going. Just needs a little more character development.

reply

yep ^ thats all it needs, we hardly know anything about them! i mean.... can anyone think of more than 5 things about each character that dont include stuff like their hair is brown. ?

No, because the show set its stall out by making the lead characters scientists. It can't ditch that without losing its credibility.

reply

That is right. The storylines can't be pushed much or any further without going over the top. That boundary has probably already been crossed. I say "Less is more".

reply

true, but still its all good fun.

reply

I agree completely - it's been repackaged for 14y/o Buffy fans. The writing is just terrible now. The last episode of the first series was essentially horror, and far removed from the silliness of this series. No wonder the other cast members bailed.

I still love it, I think it creates a great atmosphere, as long as next season they TELL US MORE ABOUT THE CHARATERS! It will be brilliant. and I dont think they over focused on Dawn, they did under focus on Bill, but the series didnt fail because of it. Justine and Craig made up for it with other qualities.

I thought with the 2 hours it was being dragged on for a bit. With 1 hour storylines, they get the storyline done and everything's included.

reply

"I still enjoy the characters and such, but I feel the plots have grown weaker over all."

I agree with you. I think the plots are actually becoming more grandiose than the program will allow for follow-up. In one episode, we have Justine who is able to (pretty frequently) foretell the future (at least in that episode)--but then it gets dropped entirely, like a head cold that clears itself up. In the last episode that aired here, you have a primary character who is both (arguably) a rape victim and the (less arguably) unwitting father of demon-spawn. I'm quite sure that neither of these issues will ever be alluded to again in future episodes.

reply

I think they should though, for closure of that storyline.

reply

I still think the series in fantastic, I don't mind the storylines they're still entertaining, but what I would say is probably ones like Oracle and from season 2 Amulet, were by far the scariest probably because (mostly with Amulet) you know that it could happen, for a while I thought I had a poltergeist so therefore it was much more scary for me.

reply

They didn't drop the storyline of having powers at all. They brought it back up again later on in the last episode with Paul McGann's character knowing that she has them.

reply

True--but she didn't actually use them. In fact, has she even used them at all since the wedding episode?

reply

I remember it happening to her more than once in series 3 but I can't remember the exact episodes. It's so long ago now I just remember it happening more than once and then the last episode you had Paul McGann's character showing that he has powers and knows about hers. They'll probably go into it more next series.

reply

I hope so. It would be a shame to just let it go. I don't think we'll hear any more about Craig fathering a demon though, and that seems like a pretty major thing to ignore. What do you think?

reply

Well, if he did get to look after the demon child, it would have serious issues...

reply

I really don't want them to follow up on that, I'd thought up a logical reason for the whole Succubus episode, if they made it obvious it was Craig's child it would take away the mystery factor of the episode.

Good point. Part of me would like the baby to be his, but another part of me couldn't bear the idea...

I have never heard of this show until today. While looking at a list of shows for this evening I saw that it will be on BBC America tonight. It sounds interesting.
