British School System

I'm from America where we have a grade system for our schools in three main divisions: elementary school (kindergarten=about age 5-6; and grades 1st-5th), middle school/junior high school (grades 6th-8th), and high school (grades 9th-12th, also known as Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior year, respectively)...one usually begins high school at about age 14-15 and graduates at about 17-18. After reading through all the arguments on these boards about how the girls in the show don't match up with their supposed year in the British school system, I became curious as to how it was set up. I was wondering if anyone could just give me a semi-brief overview the way I just did for the American school system, only for the British system.

Britain doesn't have just one system, a friend of mine in Essex her system was split into two schools:
Primary - starting age to 11
High School - 11-16
With possible sixth form afterwards

In my system in Redditch (near Birmingham) it's split into 3 schools:
Primary - Starting age to 9
Middle school - 9 to 13
High school - 13 to 16

Where I live (Wirral) it goes like:
Nursery (opional): 3/4
Primary School: 4/5-11
Secondary/High School: 11/12-16
Sixth Form: 16/17-18 or sometimes 19 if you have to resit your GCSEs.

Like Nursery, Sixth Form is opional and some people may choose go to a further education college, work or get a trade after secondary school instead going to the Sixth Form which is usually attached to their school. The ages of complusory education are 5-16 in England.
