I wouldn't suggest getting warcraft three, getting the previous two is a good idea, though they are hardly worthy of being called 'Strategy games' since all you have to do is amass an over sized force in order to win.
shareWarcraft 3 reign of chaos is the most awesome game ever. I suggest you get it if you like stragety and a great story line. Seriously, the reason I like Warcraft 3: RoC is because of the story line. The frozen throne is awesome too, it takes off from reign of chaos perfectly, but the thing is it goes to having a whole new story line... ehh I won't waste it for you. Other than my opinions, it's still a great expansion.
I have never played Battle for middle earth, so I don't know any comparison.
Warcraft 3 is the best Real Time Strategy ever. And just over massing against someone who is skilled at placement and micro managing will get you trounced.
