This is either a coincidence, or an opportunistic filmmaker trying to piggyback on the enthusiasm for the upcoming release of De Palma's film. In either case, these two movies are really not comparable. De Palma is making a big budget movie based on James Ellroy's novel. This "other" Black Dahlia movie seems to be a low budget horror flick which has nothing to do with the Ellroy book. (To get a sense of what I'm talking about, check out the producer's website at www.bloodshotpictures.com). If you've read Ellroy's book, you'll know that it is largely a character-driven story. My guess is that this other movie will spend more time focusing on a bloody fascination with the true crime murder itself. This is speculation, and I'm certainly not knocking low-budget horror flicks, but I mention it to ease the fears that this other Black Dahlia movie will somehow steal De Palma's thunder. No way. This isn't like Oliver Stone and Baz Luhrmann competing over their simultaneous Alexander the Great projects. In any case, hopefully someone from Bloodshot Pictures will read this and give us a quick synopsis so that we can all get a better idea of what they are making.

According to the Hollywood Reporter's production charts, this movie started filming sometime in the middle of last year. It looks like it's an thriller more so than a horror film. From what's out there, it looks like it is more about the girl, as opposed to the murder case. It looks more arty/underground than bloody, but it's hard to tell, I guess. There is a livejournal that has some pictures in it from the director. It is at http://www.livejournal.com/users/ramziabed/

Right on- I was kind of dissapointed- because I have had this James Ellroy book for months, and I started reading it- I got to this board and realized non of the characters from the book were in the movie- I am looking forward to another James Ellroy book adapted to the screen- because LA Confidential was so good.

I personally know the director/writer/producer of Black Dahlia. His name is Ramzi Abed. He has had this script and movie in his head for at least 4 years. And becasue it was a low budget film, it has taken a few years to finalize. It has even been mentioned in magazines like 'Film and Video' and 'Post' for it's use of different post production techniques including HD. If anybody stole the idea from someone else, I would speculate it was someone over at Universal that heard the buzz about Abed's film and took the idea with a large budget to Brian De Palma.

Elizabeth Short was a real person, and the Black Dahlia was the nickname given to her during the last year she was alive. Besides there is no copyright on titles. What's crazier is I heard Lions Gate is putting out a total nobudget slasher movie that has nothing to do with either DePalma or Abed's movies, and it's called "Black Dahlia" also! Judging from the fact that Abed's movie commenced production before the Ellroy adaptation, we can't really judge anything. Besides, the DePalma one is the adaptation of Ellroy's book, Abed's movie is some sort of tribute and investigation into the murder. It also appears to be way weirder and more arthouse. 2006-2007 will be some wacky year for the black dahlia.

Elizabeth Short was a real person (as you stated) but she never had the nickname (Black Dahlia" in real life.. that was a name given to her by the press after she was killed. In 1946 there was a very popular movie called, "The Blue Dahlia".. and the press started calling her the Black Dahlia because they found out (after her murder) that she wore a lot of black.

reply

I got the one by Lions Gate by accident. It is one of the stupidest things i have ever tried to watch. It looks like it was filmed with a home video camera.

reply

Well it's a real murder case. It's not like someone had the 'idea'.

reply

Yeah, that's very true obviously.

reply

I was confused about this as well when I first noticed this. I've been well aware of the De Palma film for a while now so when I accidentaly clicked on this page I was confused. Then on further inspection of the cast I noticed quite a few familiar names such as Lloyd Kaufman and Julie Strain, then I realized this is most likely a Troma film. For those not familiar Troma is a movie studio which has been producing loiw budget horror flicks for 30 years with a rather large fan base. Although most Troma movies don't reach too many people outside of their fan base so I seriously doubt it will hurt De Palma's film in the least.

Yeah, I just saw that trailer....I think I'll wait on the De Palma movie.

reply

I have yet to see any trailer but I am very excited and anxious to see this movie, It seems to me that it should be really really good, The black dahlia has A very good storyline and I couldnt wait to see this in movie form. It is definitely a horror film waiting to happen, I for one would be highly dissapointed if it was just made into a drama, I cant sleep sometimes just thinking about The black dahlia, her life and murder certainly haunts me still to this day.

"I cant sleep sometimes just thinking about The black dahlia, her life and murder certainly haunts me still to this day."

Then why would you want to see it exploited in a pathetic horror like this?

DePalma's The Black Dahlia has been in production for years, with David Fincher initially slated to direct. I have no doubt that BD is just a weak attempt to cash in on the buzz generated by the real movie. Just click here if you have any doubts:

WARNING: In one of the clips, the filmmakers show what might be an actual photo of the victim's body (which would indicate this film's level of respectability). So avoid clicking this link if you don't want to see that.

reply

This movie went into production way before the others. It is really low-budget, but I don't think it's a horror film exactly. Most of the body stuff in that above trailer is special effects, but like the other movie, it looks like both use the public domain picture in their trailers. I don't know if it's an attempt to cash in if the production began almost a year before the big budget movie. Who knows? It looks like next year there are gonna be a lot of movies on this same subject. I, for one, am looking forward to all of them. Also there's another older, but less horror-looking trailer they have for this movie with scoring by Ego Plum, at www.musicformovingpictures.com (it's under video reel). I think that one is cooler than the other ones that you posted.

reply

yep, those were actual case photos they used for the most part. For something low-budget they have a pretty good idea of how to handle a subject such as this. And, of course, this is coming from someone who would watch anything that Lloyd Kauffman has graced.

But, keep in mind, when it comes to Beth Short, I am very skeptical of anything that gets made into a movie. The vast majority of the info that has ever been available, is heavily heavily censored. I seriously doubt there is a single copy in which almost the whole thing was blacked out.

reply

Hollywood likes to do this kind of thing. It used to be multiple movies with the same theme competing at the box office at the same time. For example, Deep Impact and Aramgeddon. Now they have simplified their own lives and make pretty much the same movie at the same time as each other. For example, War of the Worlds. I see that three of those movies came out in the same year (2005).

reply

Ummm...no Elizabeth's name, The Black Dahlia, has never been confirmed. Some think she was named a little before when she was in Hollywood. Some think journalists started naming her.

reply

sorry to all the fans, but the De Palma version of Black Dahlia was downright dreadful. I was extremly disappointed when it was over. I expected much more, considering he did Scarface! Anyways, I wouldn't doubt this version will be more entertaining, because the biggest flaw in the De Palma version, was OVER-ACTING! They took it far too seriously. This seems like it will be much more interesting, and fun to watch. Hopefully i'm right haha.

when is this being released?

reply

Ulli Lommel (BTK and Green river killer) has a film called black dahlia coming on tuesday 10/10/06 but i can't find a listing for that one on IMDB. The box says its about a serial killer copying the murder of "hollywood starlet" betty short. so wierd

I suck monkey spunk...big time

reply

That's too bad since the Lommel film is probably really bad. I wonder when we'll get to see Abed's film? What's up with all the confusion too!

reply

Hey guys, dvdpricesearch.com says the Abed version is being released tomorrow (10/10/06)...more confusion to add to the pot, huh?

"There's a broken up girl for every broken down boy"- Chicago

reply

This has to be some mistake. The movie Lionsgate is putting out is the Ulli Lommel film! This is going to cause tons of confusion!

reply

[deleted]

You're thinking of Ulli Lommel's movie. The Ramzi Abed movie has not even been released yet. The Ulli Lommel movie is not listed on IMDB for some reason, but it is in no way shape or form the same movie as Ramzi Abed's. Ramzi's is a surreal film, whereas the Lommel film IS a ripoff! The confusion is probably only going to hurt the Abed film, which is too bad since both the De Palma film AND the Ulli Lommel film are getting such bad reviews!

This movie finally came out as The Devil's Muse a title that was created by the composer David J (of Bauhaus) who came up with the title change. The director wanted to seperate the film from the other ones, so he waited to release. It's not available everywhere, but you can definitely find it. It came out as a special 2 disc edition from arthouse distributor, Halo 8.
