When the father drops the money : question (Spoilers)

Just saw this movie and I was wondering : when the father drops the money in the locker with the name 'Carla' on it, he seems shocked. This made me think of the Argentian movie Nine Queens. I thought 'mmmm' the girl is in it somehow, but that's unlikely, but the father perhaps thinks she is in on it. I expected a conflict between them later on but obviously that didn't happen. So, my question is, did he look so sour because of the irony that he had to drop the money in that locker??
I thought this movie was good, but I think they could have developed it further (given its run-time of 90mins). Why kill off Martin so angrily? Why not squeeze more money out of his father (and probably do a bit of torturing). Also the two cops at the end? Were they corrupt or rather impostors?
Good movie, I think, but not as impressive as Nueve Reinas or Amores Perros. On the other hand, I did see those two on the big screen, unlike this one.

I think the father is shocked because he sees Carla's red boot in the locker. It's not easy to see, but check it out. You thought they killed Martin too angrily? The *beep* escaped from them and humiliated Niga. I would have killed him too.

reply

Yes I agree. It was because he recognised the boot was his daughters and he knew then that she was in trouble. If they had taken off her boots...

Yeah, if you pay attention in the scene where one of the thugs is about to rape her, you will notice that she is missing her boots. I only noticed because I LOVE legs. The one boot is in the locker with her name on it. I only watched the movie once, but you do notice at least one of her boots was missing... I don't know if both were or not anymore, I only saw it on cable once.

Also yes at the end of the movie the cops were going to rape her when they got her back to wherever they were going to take her. That's why that one thug came back and shot them both. He was kind of taking a liking to Carla and felt that Carla would learn something she wouldn't forget from her previous night about living a flashy lifestyle in the city, while everyone else suffers from poverty. When she asked the thug who opened the door of the police wagon earlier in the film why they were doing this to her. He told her that she can't live all flashy while everyone else is living around there f---ed up.

You can see at the end when she is dressed all plainly (still fine as eva) in her p.o.s. car that yes- she did learn.

They didn`t developed it further because at the beginning it was ment to be a 20 min. short. But the producers found the story good and the budget so high for a short so at the end they decided to make it a film.

Anyways it`s amazing to see such a good movie come out from a very difficult situation as the one people is living in Venezuela right now, as one of the producers said once it`s very hard to work in a market when the prices on the street may raise a 30 o 40 percent from a day to another.

"amores perros" and "nine queens" both were backed up by spanish producers and had a completely different situation around them.

What was the policia going to do with her at the end before they were killed? Re-kidnap her or what?

oh yes man believe me the police in that country isnt like us or europe police, the reason? well one of them the salary, the salary isnt the most apropiate and having "power" lay on corruption, make a kind of coaction over people to have what they wants.

reply

Oh yes, they are. I'm from Venezuela and when you see the police arrive in that scene you know that's gonna happen

If you guys pay closer attention to the end shot, you'll see that one of the 'police' was the SAME cabbie that brought Teddy Bear (or whatever his real name was) back to Niga and the crew. If you pay closer attention to his face, you'll see it. Also, when one of the kidnappers (sorry, don't remember names) the one that was going to smoke crack came back, he said to the girl "I'm no saint, but there's no way I'd let you go with those two", which to me implies that he knew about those two 'police' dudes coming back and the kindnapping crew were in kahootz with those dudes.

(I hope what I wrote makes sense)

I thought the movie was excellent.

I'm born in Venezuela, and living here actually. And yes, the police is very freaking corrupt over here, it is terrible. With Chavez, worse than worst.

I'll tell you <<Politics spoilers>> our country, is so freaking divided by Chavez, and you can see at the beginning of the movie, they won't let that scene be aired on theaters, but they couldn't. And now, we still hoping to fire the worst president of Venezuela, Chavez, and put him in prison with all his sick people (not all, just the violent ones and corrupt ones, specially, the Caracas Police <PM> <DISIP> <Policia de Caracas> <Polisucre>)

Sorry for the politics here, so, if all of you, want to know more of this movie, do it! I'll be here, and I'm sure that, another venezuelans like me, would fulfill your questions.

I will say something for my Venezuelan people:

ATREVETANSE, SI SON ABSTENCIONISTAS, VOTEN POR QUIEN QUIERAN, PERO VOTEN.
APOYO A MANUEL ROSALES 100% ESTOY SEGURO QUE TODO SALDRA BIEN EL PROXIMO 3 DE DICIEMBRE, TENEMOS LA BALANZA A NUESTRO FAVOR AUNQUE MUCHOS LO DUDEN. FUERA CHAVEZ, YA ESTUVO BUENO QUE NOS SIGAN JODIENDO E INTENTANDO ESCOÑETAR NUESTRA FELIZ (Y ESTRESADA) VIDA COMO VENEZOLANOS TODOS. VOTEN ESTE 3 DE DICIEMBRE, Y DISCULPEN LA POLITICA AQUI, QUEDAN UNOS 16 DIAS PARA LAS ELECCIONES Y SOLO SE LES PIDE QUE SIGAN A SU CORAZON, O ETICA, QUE LA VOLUNTAD DEL PUEBLO SE RESPETE. MUCHOS SALUDOS A MIS COMPATRIOTAS Y PANAS VENEZOLANOS QUE ESTEN DANDO SU GRANITO DE ARENA A DARNOS A CONOCER MEJOR EN EL MUNDO, Y LES EXTIENDO UN GRAN SALUDO DESDE CARACAS PARA TODOS LOS FORISTAS VENEZOLANOS Y EXTRANJEROS DE LA IMDb.

Greetings to all people.

It's also because it's a true story. The film was based on facts and they probably dont want to put events that didnt happen!
