Before Marvel Studios reclaimed the rights to Iron Man, and before Robert Downey Jr would completely own the role of Tony Stark, there were various attempts to bring a live-action feature film to the cinema screen.

I could had easily seen Tom Cruise in the role.

No way. Marvel was a poor boi at the time. We'd probably get Brendan Fraser at best, otherwise Eric Roberts.

I do wonder how Robert Hays would've fared as Tony Stark had an Iron Man movie been made in the '80s. Robert Hays of course, provided Tony Stark's voice on the Iron Man animated series in the '90s. He would also perform the role in guest spots on the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man animated series from that era.

Here's Robert with a goatee, so I'm trying to visualize him as Tony Stark in live-action:

Timothy Dalton is probably my main go-to actor to play Tony Stark in a hypothetical 1980s era live-action Iron Man movie.
