the first film in the new Marvel Cinematic universe still holds the title as the best entry to date. followed closely by The Avengers.

Why is this one the best entry to date? The Iron Monger fight wasn't that great. The 3 films were all good for different reasons. Iron Man 2 had the best fight scenes. 3 showed off what Tony can do without his suits.

Nothing was proven at this point. Everybody brought their A game. Now everything is part of a giant machine churning out movies yearly. There is a level of quality control hindering a lot of these movies. What they can and can't do needs to fit the next Avengers film.
Remember, Favreau had to fight for RDJ. The studios didn't want him even though now all we say is how perfect of a casting job they did.
Iron Man doesn't have the best action but it wins in character, pacing, humor, and story.
