does anyone think this has a different feel than the other two?

it has a bit more an adult and "realistic" tone, compared to the sequels which feel more lighter, fanciful, and family friendly.

No. Iron Man 3 is way more adult with depictions of PTSD, Iron Man attacking Tony and Pepper in their bed, on screen assassinations, grisly aftermath of explosions, and overall more visceral action.

Wrong. Iron Man 3 is the least serious of the bunch. Over saturated in humor and comedy bits.

reply

There's a lot of humor in the movie but it's also the most dark and violent of the three.

reply

No way, man. Iron man 3 is rife with stale jokes and an overabundance of humor. Iron Man definitely had a more serious tone, as well as a concrete message.

reply

It's because it shows the origins and development of the character, rather than a bunch of explosions and CGI!

reply

Iron Man 1 is the serious one but IM3 is the darkest..

reply

It does, because as Favreau says, he was thinking of it as being set in a world that had not had superheroes before.

It does feel like it reigns in the humor more, especially with regards to Tony. In the other two films it seems like he's near constantly making one-liners every few seconds (not necessarily a horrible thing, I find a lot of things in both films to be funny. But at points it could be potentially undercutting the drama, such as after Tony thinks Peppers is dead in "Iron Man 3".), but in this film it felt like he had room to breathe in that regard and moments of drama/silence that don't end with a punchline. I will guess that that's what the general audience gravitated towards and so they tried piling it on even more in the sequels. Again, I don't think that's necessarily a horrible thing, but this film found the proper balance IMO. If I were to make a comparison it is kind of like how after everybody loved Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" (similarly to RDJ in this it was for his energy, charisma, and humor) though in later sequels they've attempted to play up the humor, the weirdness, etc even more than the first. Now I don't think Robert Downey Jr's performances or the writing have become bad/awful or anything, but I do think the first film handled all that in the best amounts.

reply

This movie is so superior to the sequels it is not even funny

reply

Agree, Shriek. You'd think that at least the sequel would top the first one, because there's more room to play with (i.e. no need for 'origin' material to soak up movie time), but they really botched the second one. I mean, every single second of the first one is great, but only bits and pieces of the other two are.

reply

It feels like the director is actually trying to make a good film.

The two sequels are bloated with poor humour, poor villains, over-acting, one-liners, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.

Amen to that

It definitely has a more realistic and adult tone. The violence in this movie seems way more brutal. Remember how this movie starts? With a bunch of soldiers getting killed, Tony pouring out blood as he's hit by shrapnel, and then him being held hostage for the first third of the movie. The sequels have dark elements, but these elements feel shallow.

reply

It's definitely the most mature, which is part of why it's the best one. I don't know about realistic. I mean when you look at Iron Man and Iron Monger battling it out it's no different to seeing him face off against Whiplash and his drones.

Iron Man 3 and the Extremis people is the most out there concept of the three though. They look like lava people.

The first film was about Tony Stark becoming Iron Man, the second film was about Iron Man, and the third film was about Robert Downey Junior.
