Has anyone read the book this movie was based on?

Here is a link to the book on amazon.com:

I think my local library has a copy, but I was curious as to if anyone has both read the book and seen the movie and what their thoughts are on comparing the two?

I think I read it a decade back. From what I recall, it had some pretty damn gripping visuals, especially the description of the drowned buildings and especially the one with a light on inside it.
I enjoyed the book. No idea if I still have it or not.
Aside from the drowned village, the characters are completely different from the later film. I know, "gosh, what a surprise!"

The book is better than this movie, and worth reading.
