Best Asterix Film Ever?

I love Asterix and have read many of the comics, but I've only seen four Asterix films, and I put them in the order of my favorites. How does everyone else rank them?

1. The Twelve Tasks of Asterix
2. Asterix the Gaul
3. Asterix and Cleopatra
4. Asterix and the Vikings

1. The Twelve Tasks of Asterix
2. Asterix and Cleopatra
3. Asterix in Britain
4. Asterix the Gaul

(I haven't seen Asterix and the Vikings yet)

"Asterix and the Vikings" has the very best animation, that's for sure.

reply

How does the animation compare to Asterix Conquers America?

reply

"Asterix and the Vikings" has the very best animation, that's for sure.

I liked it also. One of if not the best animation cartoons I have seen.

reply

Yeah, one of the best animated movies ever! And this coming from a guy who doesn't watch many animations in general. This was brilliant and very good comedy.

reply

Yes, probably the best animated Asterix feature yet, it felt like seeing the album covers come to life.
Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the execution of the story. Modernizing a story about Vikings and Gauls is a dumb idea to begin with, even though the original was anachronistic as well, the "modern" parts were still quite toned down, here it went into full blown crazy slap-stick.
The "modern" references from the sixties would've been cooler, and even more believable. I can buy Justforkix playing a modified lyre in a 60sh rock style, but playing up a dance/trance tune with invisible instruments??? At least make it "magic" or something (maybe have him playing a big drum).
Pssft...

Excuse me, but did you actually see the film?!

Yes, did you? What's your point?

reply

"Asterix" and 3D-CGI?
Sorry, but no way!
Bad film, bad animation.

reply

It's a good thing there wasn't any 3D-CGI in it then. Only 2D-CGI. Beautiful to look at, unfortunately the beauty only went as far as the packaging, that is the story was rather naff.

I agree with you! Not any many studios did 2D animation around '06

I've seen all 8 Asterix animated films and I would rank them as such (sorry, saw them in French and don't know all titles in English):

1) Les Douze travaux d'Astérix (Twelve tasks)
2) (tie) Astérix chez les Bretons (in Britain)
2) (tie) Astérix et Cléopâtre (Cleopatra)
4) Astérix et les Vikings
5) Astérix le Gaulois (the Gaul)
6) La Surprise de César (Asterix versus Caesar, I think)
7) Astérix en Amérique (Conquers America, I think)
8) Astérix et le coup du menhir (the Big Fight, I think)

The reason of the ranking:

1) Best story, great animation, really funny, and on a personal note, I was born in Belgium and the character of the cook is 100% pure Belgian and he's hilariously perfect in his accent and mannerisms (in the original French version) and yes, it's true what they say: Belgians LOVE to laugh at their own expense!

2) a tie between two well written, funny and greatly animated films. Couldn't decide between both because Cleopatra has great songs (le pudding à l'arsenic is my favourite) but Britain has wonderful jokes about England.

4) Good animation, good story... not great but good... Loved Abba and Olaf. Thought the use of contemporary songs like "Eye of the Tiger" was a bit tacky but funny nonetheless. Thought Goudurix (Justforkix) was a bit annoying...

5) Because it's the first one... it introduces the characters really well but the story is a little poor, not in quality but in quantity... not much happens, not really funny, just mildly entertaining.

6) Really funny (based on two of my favourite albums: Asterix the Gladiator and Asterix the Legionary), but the animation is a bit poor compared to the others. I also thought the title song was really painful (sung by Plastic Bertrand, a shame in Belgian culture!) and some really good jokes from the albums were left out...

7) Nice, beautiful, but, like the Gaul... not much happens... a bit boring... but the Native girl is really cute and sweet...

8) The worst because of the story! Really annoying! I never liked the two albums it's based on ("le combat des chefs" and "le devin"... which I think in English are "the Big Fight" and "the Soothsayer"). I hate the psychedelic feel of Panoramix (Getafix)'s craziness and I hate the chef's wife gullibility and the whole tone of the film. It's not even funny...

That's about that... sorry for the long post...

FYI, I've read not all, but most of the Asterix albums, it's my all-time favourite comics. My five favourite albums are (in no particular order) Asterix Gladiateur, Astérix Légionnaire, Astérix aux Jeux Olympiques (Olympic Games), Astérix chez les Helvètes (in Switzerland) and, of course... Astérix chez les Belges (in Belgium)

1) Astérix et le coup du menhir (the Big Fight, I think)
Best story, impressive plot, hard times for the villagers, they nearly got smashed thanks to the false fortune-teller. Good animations during re-invention of the magic poison. Funny bird-legionnaire.

2) Les Douze travaux d'Astérix (Twelve tasks)
Funny, fresh, dense plot.

3) Astérix en Amérique (Conquers America)
Funny turkeys. ^^

4) Astérix chez les Bretons (in Britain)
Nice tea, nice Britons. ^^

5) La Surprise de César (Asterix versus Caesar)
Pretty ok.

6) Astérix et les Vikings
Too sterile, the "beach boy" was too cool - and to cowardly. A politically correct vegetarian, pacifist, snow-/skateboarding, piloting a hang glider, sending SMS with a dove-cellphone.

7) Astérix et Cléopâtre (Cleopatra)
Interesting, funny. A bit cheap animations.

8) Astérix le Gaulois (the Gaul)
Nice, but just old.

My favorites, from top (not counting LAMs)

1. Caesars surprise. They mixed two comics perfectly. Great story, humor, suspense, action... just the perfect Asterix movie.
2. Vikings. Stay true to the comic, but changes for the better. But, A little short, could be longer.
3. Big Fight aka Operation Hinkelstein. Again mixed two comics with good jokes and humor. Love the color of the scenery.
4. In Britain. Very close to the comic. But adds some new scenes make it worth.
5. America. Good.
6. And the gauls. Close to the comic. Good.
7. And Cleopatra. Looks too much like an Disney movie..... Talking animals and musical moments
does not belong i a Asterix movie. (but the songs are good) (i like the LAM better)

- Twelve tasks of Asterix. Wierd, Mind f--ks, Flat jokes and stupid story
Dont like it, I dont even want to put in on the list.

5) Astérix et les Vikings - best animation, but has too many modern stuff
6) Astérix en Amérique (Conquers America) - very good animation, but boring
7) Astérix le Gaulois (the Gaul) - the first one, but lack of good plot, and bad animation put it on 7th place
