The clothes for Bernice was a great idea.

Sure, it was a bit awkward and uncomfortable. Better then as motivation than a lifetime of feeling bad about herself. Because she would, as a fat person...feel bad about herself. Her mother was doing her a favor.

And, yes, it's shaming. Fat shaming. Oh, the horror! Do you know the saying, "Have you no shame?!?"

Same idea.

She got plenty of love from her mother. And she got not-so-subtle hints that she was too fat. What's wrong with that? If she was getting below-average grades at school, could the mother say anything about that? What if she had really poor hygiene? Is she allowed to say anything?

There's no good reason for her to be fat like that. Her reaction proves my point. If she were perfectly fine with her body, she would've just shrugged it off. But it obviously hurt her. She's in store for a lifetime of hurt. But if she gained some self-respect and lost the weight, there would be one less bad thing in her life.

It's called tough love. I'm sure you've heard of it. It's why most of us grow into decent adults. Why are traits such as overeating and lack of exercise immune from the process?

Please articulate what makes the issue of weight off-limits.

First of all she wasn't fat. A little chubby maybe but weight fluctuates a lot during puberty. If her mom wanted to encourage she could've signed her up for some sports or something. My mom did something very similar when I was in high school. She didn't buy the clothes but told me she would buy me a whole new wardrobe if I lost 20 lbs. made me feel like *beep* As if a chubby person doesn't deserve to have nice things. Anyway I grew up and became severely bulimic for about 15 years. Not just because of my moms "encouragements" but that stuff doesn't help. People who feel bad about themselves use food to drown out the pain. Shaming a fat person only makes them fatter.
