Mysterious Skin versus The Butterfly Effect (also released in 2004).

Did anyone find the two movies to be having much or even some in common, and which film do you think is better and why?

It seems that both films, besides being released the same year (2004), seem to at times explore similar topics, including traumatic childhoods, repressed memories, child sexual abuse etc and both seem to have fantasy, sci-fi and supernatural mixed with gritty and uncomfortable reality, Mysterious Skin involving an abduction by aliens, Butterfly Effect including time travelling etc.

So would you say the two films are in any real way similar then?
