Hardly a classic

This is the worst Metallica alblum. Its the most contrived and boring. The only good song is Where ever I may Roam. I can aprecaitte its commercial success but St Anger is true Metallica.

ST ANGER!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
UMM...have you even heard "Master or Puppets" or "Ride the Lightning"?
Frantic is the only decent song on SA...just comparing title tracks is a joke let alone the entire albums....SA is no match for MOP or RTL

reply

This is their worst album?? Can you say Load? Re-Load? Holy s hit. I mean this album is kinda below par when you compare it to stuff like MOP or RTL but honestly. Saying this is their worst album is just sad.

I'd have to rank 'em as follows. And this is just me, I'm not speaking on behalf of anyone else. Also, I'm not counting ep's, live albums or compilations.

1. Master of Puppets
2. ...And Justice for All
3. Ride the Lightning
4. Kill 'Em All
5. Metallica
6. St. Anger
7. Load
8. Reload

Being a fan from WAY back (I bought their first album new when they were still on independent label) I feel the 90's were a complete washout. Yes, they were commercially the most viable during that time, but I thought the music was lacking (that includes the black album). If I were to pick an album to do a doc on, it would have been either Master Of Puppets or ...And Justice....
But, in spite of all I said, I am still a fan, and I do like all they've done. (St. Anger kicks ASS! Didn't think Lars could do that anymore!)

Cool story.

Now to be honest we all know this is the most hated Metallica album simply because it's the most popular. Die hard Metallica fans and Thrash Metal fans just couldn't handle the fact that other people started listening to Metallica. After the success of The Black Album, they didn't feel special anymore.

Perhaps this album marks a point in which Metallica broadened their musical styles, but this doesn't make it bad at all. "Wherever I May Roam" and "Enter Sandman" kick ass just like any of their best songs from the previous albums. For me this album proved that Metallica is a versatile band, and they can rock hard whether their music is simple or more sophisticated. Considering the albums that followed, this album is one of Metallica's best.
