Ballet shoes?

Can someone explain this scene to me...as far as I understood it, Jin-sung put a shard of glass in So-hee's ballet shoes? Then So-hee can't find her shoes, so she borrows Jin-Sung's? But then she still gets hurt somehow when she makes that turn while dancing...so did Jin-sung put the glass in her own shoes and then switch them or something...? If someone could just explain that scene and then the later flashback of the same incident to me that'd be great.

alright i dunno about any piece of glass, all i know is that so-hee is dancing so hard and putting all her weight on that foot so her toe breaks or snaps.

No, Jin-Sung DID put glass in Soo-hee's shoe, it was shown in the flash back scene, you can also see that she has blood on her shoe. To the OP, your actually getting two scenes mixed up, the part where she borrows Jin-Sung's shoes take place a couple of days before the glass scene.

i thought that this whole idea was really stupid.

i mean come on, so hee was jumping like crazy as you hear the glass crackling and she's still smiling like a mofo.

i don't understand these asian directors sometimes.

I eat pieces of *beep* like you for breakfast.

Haha, the people in my room at work probably think I'm really weird now but the smiling like a mofo made me laugh. It's true though, she is...

Vermin, will you stop eating?!

I agree, it didn't seem to be the best way to handle that. I enjoyed the movie, but that 'smiling like a mofo' scene left me scratching my head. Maybe the director was trying to highlight her passion for winning or something, with her pushing through the pain. But still, it was her mom that really wanted it, not her.

And even if that's what the director was going for, it just seemed too unrealistic. I've been cut by glass before (as most of us have I'm sure) by a shard much, much smaller than the one in her shoe. It hurt. Putting weight on the wound would have been painful and it wasn't even half as bad as what she seemed to endure. Something that size cutting your freaking toe enough to where blood soaks through pointe shoes (while you're on pointe, no less) is enough to at LEAST cause a grimace or an immediate yelp after the performance is done, even from the most badass of people. Or so you'd think. Maybe I just missed something?

Edit: Upon a second viewing of the film and reading this thread http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0370082/board/flat/22519509?p=1, I think I get what the director was trying to do. I'm still surprised So-hee was able to hold it together with her foot bleeding from the glass though.

With eyes so dilated, I've become your pupil.

I seem to recall seeing a video about ballet dancers where it was said that dancing en pointe (tips of the toes) hurt but that dancers simply tolerate the discomfort. Blisters, boils, athlete's foot, cuts of the feet, and even bleeding are common injuries. I guess that the Adrenaline makes them forget about the pain while performing.

cuz it isn't explained - it's open to interpretation - my interpretation of the scene is that it demonstrates SoHee's love for JinSeong - in a flashback near the end of the film - it shows a ballet student spotting JinSeong putting the glass in the ballet shoes - then whispering it to someone who i had a hard time recognizing - i think it's SoHee - if i'm correct - SoHee wore the shoes knowing about the glass

Nope, Hae-Ju stole Soo-Hee's shoes at the beginning the movie while Soo-Hee is healing. Then Soo-Hee notice her shoes are gone, so she borrow's Jin-Sung's. Jin-Sung'S shoes were worn out by Soo-Hee, so she propose Jin-Sung to buy a new pair, but she refuse. So Soo-Hee buy a new pair for Jin-Sung and place them in her locker. When Jin-Sung saw them, she freaks out and break her bottle and put a shard of glass in those shoes. Then she exchange shoes with Soo-Hee the day of the audition. But since Soo-Hee knew about it, maybe place some sort of cushion so she doesn't get hurt that much.
