Question about why Owen was yelling order

While Owen and the others were shooting at those flying dinosaurs, he hears Zach and Grey calling for Claire, then he puts down his rifle and says, "No, hold your..." before getting attacked from behind.

I guess he was about to say, "No, hold your fire" - so why did he want everyone to hold their fire?

So that they wouldn't hit the kids was my guess.

@phantomF-12 But they were shooting into the air, and the kids weren't any higher than anyone else. It doesn't make much sense to me.
