Instead of paying the nanny with appliances...

Why didn't they just fire her and have one of them stay home to take care of their son?

I'd assume they were paying her at least minimum wage, likely more since they were well off and she was pretty much raising their son.

So when they first decided to both get minimum wage jobs, didn't they realize that one of them would have basically been working JUST to cover the cost of their nanny? Even worse if she's getting paid more than either of them.

Yeah, it doesn't really make sense that they kept her once they started struggling. Jane even quit her job with hopes of spending more time with her son. When both are unemployed having the nanny was silly.
