My mom worked for Enron

Lost her savings, anything invested in the company. She even had my entire college education saved for and planned for.

I think she was with Enron for almost 15 years, and it absolutely sucks that they screwed over so many people. People like that deserve to rot in prison

They did get long prison sentences, didn't they? One guy even killed himself.
That doesn't help you and your family though. I'm all for punishing criminals, but the judiciary doesn't really do justice to the victims...

reply

No, they didn't get long prison sentences.

J. Clifford Baxter: was found dead with a gunshot wound through the right side of his head. An autopsy was performed and the death was ruled a suicide.

Kenneth Lay: Potentially 45 years in prison plus monetary fines, but death during appeals process resulted in the abatement of all charges.

Jeffrey Skilling: 172 months (originally 292 months) and fined $45 million USD.

Andrew Fastow: Six years, followed by two years of probation.

The larger point though is that none of that helps the victims of their crimes.

I don't consider 6 and 14 long. Lay never actually went to jail (death, too easy). But yea. Doesn't help the victim. Though I'd hope for some deterrent effect.

Then there are the conspiracy theories about Ken Lay. He was a good buddy of that crook GW Bush. If anybody could have made him disappear it was that corrupt clown. He could be living on a tropical island somewhere enjoying the life he stole from so many others.

Not saying I believe that stuff but...

To the OP, sorry to hear that about your mom. There are just so many crooked people in high places in this world that I don't blame anyone for getting jaded. I take solace in knowing they're heading to the same place all of us are: death. Hopefully Karma will settle accounts with them, one way or another.

Jeff Skilling is getting out in 2019. He had a review of his conviction, the verdict on all counts was confirmed... and they cut ten years off his sentence.

The restitution of life is no great feat. A variety of deaths may well enter into your punishment

I always wondered, so is that what happened in real life? Enron was a real company that went bankrupt?

reply

Yes, and this was 6-7 years before the financial crisis hit. Enron was a warning sign that deregulation just doesn't work - or it does work, but in the short term only. And no-one took any notice. I'm sorry the OP lost his college fund.

reply

Correct. Only communism works. We gots Obama now, and he gonna pay for my car, my house, my food... I ain't gonna have to worry 'bout nothin.

Check out "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1016268/reference

Jaw-dropping film. It would be classed as farce if it weren't true.
