Terrible PBS Redford version

Hillerman's books require Hollywood not PBS Redford. Sad for the native american actors who were good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series.
Tony Hillerman acknowledged that it is difficult to bring a novel to the screen.
If I understood the comments he made during his appearance in the "Coyote Waits: Behind the Scenes" feature on the DVD, he implied that a TV adaptation doesn't necessarily mean that there will be a pure translation of the novel to the screen, and maybe there shouldn't be. What works for the novel may not work for the screen.
Hillerman seemed satisfied that the flavor of his novel had been given a good book-to-screen rendition.
I agree that the actors did a great job in their roles.
The movie may have lacked a true representation of some of the ways in Navajo culture, and may not have been entirely true to the novel, but it was well-done and entertaining.
As a result of watching "Coyote Waits", "Skinwalkers" and "A Thief of Time", I have become interested enough to go out on my own and read about Native American culture.
I feel in that in this respect, the PBS series was a success.
