That's all on Michael Mann. He believes in the trope that the anti-hero must die for his sins.

I'd prefer a different ending where Jon Voigt's character is the surprise villain who sold out Neil and his crew to Vincent Hannah and Neil successfully kills both in not only an act of revenge but also as a message that he holds true to the code above all else. Neil already tells the audience that he's no saint, but he's no fool either. Why kill him off to a weaker character like Hannah who remains loyal to post-modernistic dead tech wife and her medicated daughter?
