Trendafil's gesture after eliminating guard

Did anyone understand what was the meaning of a gesture he made with his hand after getting rid of that guard using the boot's spur? Or maybe he was just looking at his hand amazed at what he'done.
It even crossed my mind that it was an irony-reference on Darth Vader's 'move' from Star Wars when he choked a guard in the same fashion using just his hand.

I think it was that he ACTUALLY stood up for himself for once.

What's in it? Big stuff. Big, charging, pistons! This thing is a *beep* work of art!

Yes I agree and think that's it: Him, standing up for something higher (not exactly himself).

In the beginning of the movie Trendafil is portrayed as a coward deserting the call of army duty and I think that he didn't expect him self to be capable of taking a human life and on top of that for the wright moral and ethical reasons as the situation turned out to be.

In fact it was Santino Genovese's purpose to help Trendafil become the Hero and not himself.

Ultimately, Vitomir's debt was paid in a poetic reversal of the roles. This time Santino is the one that dies and get's left behind in Shefket's prison and thus the circle is complete. Trendafil earns his right to live happily under the stars with his new found extended family.

Exactly. He always considered himself to be a pacifist, but suddenly he realized that he had it in him to stand up and fight for something he believed in. Thus he looked at his hand in disbelief. It's what the poets call "the shock of recognition."
