One person that absolutely has to be there from one of the greatest films ever is Warden Norton from The Shawshank Redemption. The way he threatened Andy and the fact that he had I, believe it was Tommy, killed. He is Satan incarnate as far as I;m concerned.

i havent seen it, was Han solo there?

"What an incredible smell you've discovered!"

How could they not have John McClane (Bruce Willis) from the DIE HARD trilogy? He's basically the living embodiment of heroism. By the way, it's JOHN Rambo, not James.

Here are some Movie Characters, I think should have been on that List:

Heroes:

Vito Corleone (Godfather I & II)

Luke Skywalker (Star Wars IV, V, VI)

Judah Ben-Hur (BEN-HUR)

Rhett Butler (Gone With The Wind)

George Bailey (It's a Wonderful Life)

Captain John H. Miller (Saving Private Ryan)

General George Patton (PATTON)

General Douglas MacArthur (MACARTHUR)

Jim Garrison (JFK)

John F. Kennedy (Thirteen Days)

Villains:

Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Apocalypse Now)

Tony Montona (Scarface)

Emperor Palpatine (Star Wars I, II, III, & VI)

Commodus (GLADIATOR)

Warden Samuel Norton (The Shawshank Redemption)

Senator Joseph Payne (Mr. Smith goes to Washington)

Annie Wilkes (Misery)

Al Capone (The Untouchables)

Joan Crawford (Mommie Dearest)

reply

Is Vito a hero or an antihero? Let's be honest here, he DOES threaten a man's life so that Johnny can get a recording contract. He also has a horse killed to get him a part in a movie. And that's just from part one. We see him as an even more vicious young man in part two. Not exactly heroic material, if you ask me. By the way, some of the people that you mention are already on the lists.

reply

Well, I think of Vito Corleone as a Flawed Hero. The stuff you mentioned about him is true, but you know, he is trying to help anyway he can. His intentions are good, although his motives for those intentions aren't.

Here are a few examples:

1. Vito shot Don Fanucci because Don Fanucci was threatening the neighborhood to give him more money. If you notice in Godfather 2, Don Fanucci was threatening some Italian Actor for more money and used the actor's daughter by threatening to kill her. If you ask me, Don Fanucci deserved what was coming to him.

2. Vito killed Don Ciccio for revenge of the murder of his parents and older brother. Don Ciccio killed an innocent woman simply because he thought her son was a threat to him and Vito's mother wasn't really a threat to him. Such a thing could not go unpunished.

3. Vito helped out Signora Columbo (the woman got kicked out of her apartment because of her dog) get her apartment back. As far as I know, he didn't do anything to the landlord, except talk to him about the situation. No bad motives here.

Despite the first two examples I gave, Vito is also a warm, loving father and husband, and the irony of his character is that it is precisely the warmth of his humanity that makes him appear superhuman. Vito seems to be the perfect father and the perfect Godfather, it kinda makes him a difficult role model for all of his children, especially Michael, to imitate. He is a man of his word who loves his family to death. It's true that he also silent and intense, but unlike Michael, he does not let this intensity eat away at him.

It just goes to show you, the deeds of great man far outweigh his personal weaknesses.

reply

Actually, Gandalf was nominated.

reply

I can't believe that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Han Solo made the list but Luke Skywalker didn't. Luke destroyed the Death Star and brought his father back from the dark side. Isn't that enough to qualify him as a greater hero than say, Maximus from Gladiator?

reply

I agree, I think Luke Skywalker is a way better hero than Han Solo (no offense to all you Solo fans). Han Solo was more of a smuggler and a gambler, I don't think that he's exactly heroic material. But Luke always tried to do what was right, with Obi-Wan's guidance of course. Oh well, at least he was nominated.

Joan Crawford was played by Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest. She was on there. #40 or something

reply

Annie Wilkes and Joan Crawford made the list of villans and I believe a few of the heroes you mentioned were on the lsit also you should go to AFI.com to check out the 50 heroes and villains and check out the complete 400 nominees

reply

i vote for a 3rd category containing Richard Gecko (From Dusk Til Dawn), Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver), Ash (Evil Dead), and Elvis (Buba-Ho-Tep).

I don't think any of these characters fit into the hero/villian category but all deserve recognition.

this actually is an irrelevent point to bring up.......i just like their characters alot.

reply

There are numerous ommitions to the list, but the omition I am most disturbed by is that John Doe (Se7en) was not listed as one of the top villians.

reply

What is an "ommition"?

reply

Travis Bickle and Annie Wilkes were on the list. As was Scarface, but they only clips from the 1932 movie, not 1983.

Here goes mine:

Villains-
John Doe (Se7en)
Quilty (Lolita)
Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th series)
Simon Gruber (Die Hard 3)
Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs)
Neil McCauly (Heat)
Jack the Ripper (From Hell, probably a lot more)
Adolf Hitler (the Bunker, likely others)
Nino (New Jack City)

Heroes-
Henry Hill (Goodfellas)
Humbert (Lolita)
Freddy Heflin (Cop Land)
Van Helsing (Dracula)
Paul (Death Wish series)

The life of the wife is ended by the knife.

reply

Wouldn't Henry Hill be more of a villain? Or an anti-hero at the least? Which Van Helsing would you recommend? I thought only the first DEATH WISH film was worthy of any praise, and Jason Voorhees is greatly overrated. But the main one I agree with you on is Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) in NEW JACK CITY. Any guy that uses a little girl as a shield during a shootout is just asking for it.

Here I am, stuck in the middle with you!

reply

Henry Hill most definitely never saw himself becoming good. His goal in life was to be a gangster. Nonetheless, he went against his life-long dreams to do what was right.

I liked Death Wish 2 also but maybe that has more to do w/ the Jimmy Page soundtrack. Anyway, I don't think inferior sequels were a factor because some of the others are also like that (Bond, Nightmare on Elm Street).

For Jason, I'd say he's actually underrated. He's a far more interesting character than people give him credit for. It all started when he drowned as a child because the camp counselors were having sex and not paying attention. That's why he kills the kids who have premarital sex. In this regard, it's difficult to see him as evil because he is the instrument through which the morals of the movie are communicated. Such is the fascinating paradox that makes him more than the cliche.

The life of the wife is ended by the knife.

reply

The reasons you state for Jason being "a far more interesting character than people give him credit for" is why I dismiss him as nothing more than a rip-off of Michael from HALLOWEEN. Not to mention that I find Laurie far more interesting than any of the heroines in any of the FRIDAY THE 13TH films. I think the only actual performance of Jason that is worth noting is in FREDDY VS. JASON. I should also mention that the first HALLOWEEN was the only film in that series that I liked, just so you don't think I'm playing favorites.

s to the left of me.
s to the right.
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you!

reply

AFAIK, Michael Myers was just a head case. Total insanity and nothing else. Jason actually had a motive, something that made him tick.

Oh, I forgot to address this last time. The Van Helsings I had in mind were the ones of Edward Van Sloan and Peter Cushing, the older but wiser man who challenges science and go forth with what he believes. I suppose the Anthony Hopkins portrayal is along the same lines and, hell, I even liked Christopher Plummer's modern version. I haven't seen the 1979 film, yet I'd imagine Laurence Olivier not disappointing. Hugh Jackman's was a mere 19th century Bond knockoff.

The life of the wife is ended by the knife.

reply

Of course Michael was a head case, that's what makes him so deadly. I think Jason wanted revenge more for the death of his mother rather than what happened to him. The only one of the FRIDAY THE 13TH films that I liked was the third one, it seemed more like a HALLOWEEN than a FT13TH. Not to mention the 3-D effects (my fave is the shooting spear into the girl's eye). I think I like Cushing's Van Helsing the most, he was a combination of a man of science, magic and action (his best outing: BRIDES OF DRACULA).

The Kurgan from Highlander would have been a good choice. Not the best movie, but an excellent performance from Clancy Brown.

reply

I can't believe Michael myers was nowhere to be seen and they put freddy in there.

reply

I think its interesting what kind of heroines were picked for this list. Action Heroines triumph over the Great Ladies. Work-in-Class Feminists and Female Gun-Slingers, for the most part, over the traditional lady. Ellen Ripley over Kay Miniver, for example. For the most part, it looks like the traditional heroine was snubbed, here, but in a way, I find them to be more admirable. They help people in more unconventional ways, and they are optimistic and make good example to love and care for others in harsh situations. They stand up for what they believe in and do not resort to the traditional violent form of heroism. Take Deborah Kerr's Anna Leonowens, for example. She may be the heroine of a 50's R&H musical, but she's a strong, vibrant, modern woman, and has the gut to stand up to an Absolute Monarch (with a nasty temper, for that matter) and to move to a foreign country where she knows virtually no one. She stands up for what she believes in no matter what the circumstance and influences the King's Son to modernize the absolute monarchy of Siam. She is studious and intelligent, is fiercely devoted to her son, Louis, and brings joy to the Royal Household of Siam, (mainly the children). She is able to move a heartless king to attempt to change his ways (as we see in the end) and it is moving. This is a real heroine, IMO, because she does not resort to physical force.
