The Downfall of Two and a Half Men

I understand Season 9 to 12 was a downfall, although, I don't see why all the hate upon it, I know all Charlie Sheen fans miss seeing him, (he doesn't care about it anymore either) at least Charlie Harper was shown at least a few minutes before his final fate at the end of the finale, because they brought mostly everybody back from the past seasons in the finale, I know the animated was bad too though, Screw Chuck on not showing a real life sequence between That Darn Priest and Nice to Meet You Walden Schmidt: "which could have been unreal to see" but that's how they wanted it.

Don't be commenting anything bad behind my back upon this, I am still a fan of both seasons, it is still just a show though, as much some of you think it ran its course and how it failed, it still stands as "The Longest American TV Sitcom of all time

RIP: Two and a Half Men and Charlie Sheens absence after got fired

I loved the show with Charlie and I continued to love it with Walden. The show managed to stay consistently funny even after Charlie left though I will admit Season 9 is a bit shaky.

12 years is more than enough for any series.

The downfall of the show was Charlie becoming a nuisance and getting fired. And then the writing went down from funny and clever, to juvenile and stupid. That is when the show went from great to terrible.

I just started watching the season where Ashton Kutcher joins the cast. It seems okay.

Even before Aston came aboard, even before Charlie Sheen went insane, they show started to slip when Charlie Harper got engaged.

I like both versions, but much like the Simpsons, the writing changed - and not for the better.

I think Sheen was a bit funnier than Kutcher but even the scenes away from Kutcher aren't as funny as when Sheen was on board. The scenes with Alan and Herb were comedy gold, or Alan and Berta, or Rose, or Mom, etc.

IOW, I think the writing slipped and just happened to coincide with Sheen's self destruction.

Most series get better with the best years being the middle years. I think 2.5 Men just ran it's course like every other show eventually does.

I think the best seasons are 1-4.....then 9-12 with Walden....then 5-8

I thought the downfall was because of the high levels of douchebaggery of the main cast members.

reply

Nah, there was **always** high levels of douchebaggery of the main cast members even in it's golden years.

The first four seasons were pure gold, but at some point during season five the comedic quality started to decline (also notice that season five was strangely shorter than other seasons). Up until (and including) season seven, the show was still watchable but it didn't yield as many laughs. Season eight was absolutely awful, a real train wreck - even Charlie looked and sounded rough.

As for the seasons with Ashton, most of them weren't as bad as everyone made out. However, there was a higher rate of juvenile toilet humour, than normal, which quickly grated. But, in the show's defence, there was one Ashton season that was almost as good as the first five seasons (I think it was season nine or ten but can't be completely sure). Sadly, by season twelve, it felt as if everyone involved had completely given up trying.

That's when the writers strike was going on from 2007 - 2008.

It became less and less funny during the Charlie years when Jennifer Bini Taylor's character (Chelsea) started becoming a regular. She was very pushy when it came to Charlie. He could never be the womanizer we've witnessed for years prior. When they ditched her in season eight, I was thrilled.

And then there was Jake. All grown up and nobody knowing what to do with his character. So, they pair him with a stoner buddy and make mainly fart jokes (they were doing this in the earlier seasons, but it wasn't as bad).

Pretty much agree with you on the Ashton Kutcher years with the exception that any of them were good. From what I can recall, they sucked. It was a different show at that point.

reply

Agree with what you said. The Ashton Kutcher years sucked, but the downfall started before then. I think it was season 6 when Chelsea became a regular and the show seemed less funny. The older Jake got, the less funny his scenes were.
