Anyone -not- like their "Open Concept" place after moving in?

"Open Concept" seems to be all that anyone wants anymore, and we bought one thinking it would be cool, but gotta say i am missing separation of spaces myself!

walk into our house and you are in a wide open area that is the living room, dining room and kitchen.. and essentially also in the utility room, half bath, master suite and master bath as it is all so close together and so dang OPEN! Yes there are doors at the master suite and bath's and utility rm, but it somehow doesn't feel right to keep them all closed.

Realized after moving in, you can actually see into the master bath, while standing outside the house on the front porch, looking in thru the front door, which is basically all glass.. straight shot all the way deep to back of house (which is the master bath).. crazy!

Another thing noticed is due to the openess all smells from the kitchen go all over the house... even just running dishwasher, you can actually smell it upstairs as there are no friggin walls anywhere to block scents floating about at will.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else feeling the same way... if we ever move again it is going to be a place with rooms!

I'm an old fashioned person. I don't like an open concept where everything is just one big room. I see that on these shows and it looks like you're living in a warehouse. I like a separate formal living room and a separate formal dining room. A family room that isn't an extension of the kitchen. I like a kitchen where I can cook in peace and the smells don't invade the rest of the house. And I don't like a house where you open the front door and see the kitchen appliances and cabinets on display. As we say in the south, I think that's just tacky!

(Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.)

free floating scents sounds kinda cool.

The only thing I like about it is being able to watch tv from the kitchen. The noise from the kitchen is annoying for others when watching tv. Open concept homes are not cozy feeling.

We moved from what I would call a typical farm-style house, with definite room designations about 6 years ago, to a one-storey, open concept home. The only thing I don't love is that I kind of have to keep the kitchen decent looking most of the time. Our house has the great room, eating area and kitchen open, and there is a dining room and another kind of den like room that are on the same floor, but are partially separated by a closet and half bath, and a stairwell. Bedrooms and family bathroom are off a hallway.

It has vaulted ceilings and large windows and a sunroom, too. Very light and airy and we do not clutter the walls, so it is very serene and simply decorated.

I sometimes miss my homey two-story, but I love the one floor plan and the openness, not to mention no stairs, except to the basement.

I love my open concept. Of course I can't see any bathrooms from my kitchen..lol. My living area is at the back of the house, and there's a long/wide/open hallway leading to the back. It's just our family room, kitchen and dining area. It's very cozy and cute.

It's easier that it's only my husband and me at home now (kids are grown) so I love cooking in the kitchen and having the tv on. If he's sitting on the couch after work, he can talk about his day while I make dinner. I find it to be more bonding for us than if I was in the kitchen alone.

Maybe poker's just not your game, Ike. I know, let's have a spelling contest.

You sound very much like me and my husband, chiligirl. Just me and my husband and a cozy situation.
