Even if Sam didn't know Yan's secret identity as Hau's half-bro, he knew that Yan was a trusted member of H's gang. Hau even died in Yan's arms in front of Sam's eyes. Even though Keung must have vouched for Yan, if I was Sam, there's no way I'd trust Yan to be in my inner circles.

Yeah but Yan becomes Sam's right hand man, even closer than Keung, by IA. It doesn't matter how Yan first joins Sam's gang, Sam still trusted him at the end. If I was Sam, I would not have done so. Surely he can find some other gangsta to be his #2.
