Question on Sam and Yan

Question about Sam: Near the end after Hau was killed, the Thai guy phoned Sam about the situation with Hau's family in Hawaii. Sam said to Inspector Wong that his Thai friends were only there to scare them. During his conversation with The Thai guy that, Sam appeared that he wanted to keep his promise by not killing them saying that they had gone too far. The Thai guy said that you are never too far in this world and killed the family. Did anybody notice that? Did Sam really wanted to keep his promise by not killing Hau's family? Or was he lying?

Question about Yan: After Hau was killed, do you think Yan was REALLY upset OR was he pretending to be upset in order to cover himself?

"I am Keung...Sam's man, Del Piero's boy..."

reply

I personally think all he wanted was to scare Hau, not realising the consequences that will brought, and Yan was upset as it is his recruiter who shot his own half-brother.

reply

it wasn't anthony wong's character that shot hau. it was edison chen's.

reply

ta-33, Wong shot Hau. Not Edison. Wong had his gun out and it was clearly smoking, Edisons gun was still holstered.

i agree with moviebuffwwc. Sam had no intention of killing Hau's family. it was just to scare Hau off. But it was the Thai who insisted they kill Hau's family.

i think Yan was really upset when Hau died. After all, at one point i think he really felt family ties with Hau. And it did not help that when Hau was shot, he fell into Yan's arms and discovered Yan was a cop all along. I guess that made Yan's guilt all the more unbearable.

and Yan, despite having it rough most of his life, i think has maintained a degree of innocence. look at his face when Hau killed his bodyguard who happens to be also a undercover cop. he was clearly not used to witnessing murder.

Totally agree - Sam hadn't thought things through. Yan was devastated - I thought it was fascinating that the ending made Hau a partially sympathetic character, even after he'd done so many evil deeds.

reply

Hau found out Yan was a cop right before he died when he found the transmitter, but immediately he covered it up for Yan. I thought it meant that since he was dying anyway he wasn't going to be mad at Yan for being a cop, and instead he wanted Yan to keep being a cop so he could eventually avenge his death by catching Sam.

reply

I don't think he was covering up for Yan. He was shot in the forehead for god's sake.

reply

And yet he still managed to pull out a hidden mike and look at his half-brother with that bullet in his head.

Is it really that hard to suspend your disbelief that one last inch? :-P

reply

I don't know...

Let's visualize:

*Shot in head - few seconds to live*
*Grab half-brother's jacket in pain*
*Realise that after you have known him for almost your whole life, he turns out to be a policeman*
*Just about a million thoughts flush into your brain, what you should do, was it him who blew his cover?*
*You have about 3 seconds to live - do you have enough energy to shout out "Yan is a mole!"*

I don't know...

My bigger issue was that Sam allowed for the Hau's family to be killed YET left the brother to work for him. How does that make sense? It makes more sense to kill the brother bec he could exact revenge on you & the fact that he was next in line in the family. The wife & the daughter weren't really a threat, the biggest threat was Yan, yet they let him live.

Do we even know that Sam knows about Yan's family ties? Hau mentioned in a conversation with Yan how he understands that Yan wants it to be a secret or something along those lines.
