julian fellowes explains...

first and foremost I had the opportunity to see the film in the u.s. when i was travelling abroad and julian fellowes spoke afterwards. This film is exceptional. In his words, the youth of today will not understand the subtext within the film being 'love, devotion and hope beyond the age of 40."

His words ring true as I gaze at some of these comments. Maybe it was a bit too intellectual for the americans.

cheers.

"Maybe it was a bit too intellectual for the Americans."

God, you are a snob.

It is possible for people to "get" the premise of the movie and still not like it. A comment like that is incredibly rude.

Where in the US did JulianFellowes speak after a screening of Separate Lies? NYC? How interesting, lucky you, he is a wonderful writer, mature story lines .. can you share whatever else he had to say on the story? The comment "Love, devotion ,hope beyond 40" intrigues me, as I did feel their age gap was one issue in their maritial problems ... she was too young for him, and too imature to articulate her problems with her husband .. therefore nothing is solved without communication... how can you solve a problem when you don't know there is one?! Anyhow, please share whatever else you remember of Julian's talk. Many thanks, Joanne

dubliners06 is on the right track. To those who responded with such nastiness to his comment, I suggest you rent the DVD of this movie and listen to the director's commentary, one of the best and most enlightening I have ever heard. It will shed wonderful light on all the characters, especially Wilkinson's.
