Was that guy homosexual?

Remember when mia, lily, charlotte, jue, and clarise are looking at mias choices for a husband and when they come to antoinne something (the french dude mia thought was cute), and joe said his BOYFRIEND thought he was cute also? Was he gay?

P.S. sorry about the mistakes, i'm typing with one hand and eating doritos with the other.

reply

The French dude was gay, but not Joe.

reply

Yeah...that's why Mia and Lily said "Right On!"

*Say You'll Love Me, Every Waking Moment*
Phantom of the Opera Forever!

reply

lol i was watching that on disney channel and was surprised they left that in on the disney channel!

reply

As a side to this, the girl who plays Lilly, Heather Matarazzo, is a lesbian. So I always took it as a little inside info part of the movie. I like it when movies are able to put little pieces like that in. It makes it interesting, and fun if you know that little thing about the actor. Just like in Princess Diaries 1, when Michael's band is playing, the song you hear is a real song (Blueside) by the actor who played Michael, Robert Schwartzman's band, Rooney. Just thought I'd add that. :)

reply

That's one of my favorite scenes, because Mia and Lily pump their fists in the air and say "Right on!". I thought that was a really cute and clever line - I'm glad to hear Disney kept it when it aired on TV.

reply

Pardon a European who has never even watched the Disney channel, but could you please explain to me why the Disney channel would edit out that someone has a boyfriend of the same gender? Is it legal in the US to base censorship on blatant homophobia? Is homosexuality as a fact considered a topic unfit for youngsters? Why? Where I live such censorship would be inexcusable, on level with racism.

reply

The Disney Channel in the US is known for editing out parts of movies that would be 'controversial' for some viewers. I believe they claim its so they can 'keep the movie in its alloted time slot' or some other BS like that. Disney Channel is *for kids* and they try to alter movies so that they don't offend people. Just like you can't say @$$hole on TBS, and can't say other curses.

I'm not surprised that Disney let it through. Unless you were older and could keep up, I don't think many 5 year olds would pick up on the 'his boyfriend thinks so too' while watching the movie. But that's my opinion.

reply

Thanks for the input! The Disney Channel sounds horribly lame, especially considering the fact that so many of their animated movies has a "be yourself" message....hypocrites.

reply

Well, yes, censorship like that (claiming it's for other reasons) happens all the time. People get fired for one reason, but it's really sexism/racism/heterosexism, too. But that's not Disney's fault.

Disney is very openly accepting of homosexuals. It was one of the first large companies to grant insurance coverage to same-sex partners of their employees (as many spouses are covered).

They aren't being hypocritical (and more so since they didn't even edit out the scene in question) but a previous poster was surprised because his or her image of the Disney channel didn't fit with a company that would acknowledge homosexuality as being acceptable.

reply

I was just watching it on Disney Channel and was like, "Ohhh! They're gonna get angry letters from homophobic parents!"

reply

The Disney empire may be accepting of gay employees — now. But for many, many years (especially while the old man was alive) not so much. The claim, of course, was always on account of their target audience.

Then there's the FCC. Thankfully viewers now have a few more options than the public airwaves. You'll notice that the channels with fewer restrictions are those available only on cable and satellite.

And then there's the MPAA. Always ready to downgrade any movie with a gay theme or a prominent gay character or a chaste gay kiss. A documentary a few years ago showed side-by-side examples of straight and gay couples kissing, making out, etc, with those movies' MPAA ratings. Whatever rating was given to the movie with the straight couple, the movie with the gay couple was always rated at least one level worse.

Sorry about the tirade. That just pushes one of my buttons.

Leave it to a European to trash the US.

Seriously, that was unnecessary.

Nobody trashed the US, they trashed the Disney Channel.

Justifiable, we have been very backwards on the issue.

I didn't get the 'right on' line. Could someone please explain it to me?

I'm anespeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericumbobulations...

reply

Just a sign of acceptance or positivity that he's openly gay, I guess. As a gay guy, it's one of my favorite bits in the movie, to see something positive like that in a Disney movie.

reply

I'm so glad they left that in there, too :)
Gays are pretty much awesome haha

reply

Don't forget, 'Remember the Titans,' a Disney release, had a gay character and a gay kiss from what I remember.

He wasn't gay, he did that to mess with the other guy's head. The movie is based on a true story, and the guy being portrayed isn't gay.

Disney did edit "9-5" as to the pot smoking scene. That was a long time ago but quite noticeable in the gap it left in the movie. The pot smoking led to the brain-storming of what each of the ladies would do to their boss if they could.

reply

I think Disney is getting a bad rap here if they were so homophobic they would have never put it in the movie to begin with.

Disney was terrible to gay people until they were sued by park patrons for banning same sex dancing at the parks. They were forced, kicking and screaming into acceptance. There used to be, maybe still is, an annual gay families day there, unofficial, to make sure they didn't discriminate.

Disney never thought they would lose such a lawsuit, so they ended up giving up and suddenly became progressive on the issue. It was awkward for them because at lot of the animation staff was gay and there were rumors they would strike.

So they may have been progressive, but it wasn't by choice.

Tommy Kirk was a lead in a number of their monpvies until they found out he was gay.

I thought it would have been an interesting twist if the English guy was gay. Would have given him as a character a little more of an edge, I guess, because not only would he be marrying Mia simply to support her, but he would have known that he could never even grow to love her, either. But actually my idea is a little contrived, and would have been too convenient for Mia - it's more realistic to portray the fact that two attractive, heterosexual people can simply be friends and support each other without one of them having to be gay or the like.

I'm pretty surprised and disappointed that the Disney Channel edited that out. Perhaps they feared that parents would complain? Still a lot of backwards-thinking people in the world.

havent seen it in a long time but why cant it be a main characters versus a minor character
