Am I the only one...

...who was highly disappointed by this movie? The one-liners that I had hears so much about were stale. Depp's character was admittidly based on Keith Richards, but if I want to see Keith Richards, I'll watch a Rolling Stones concert, not a pirate movie. There was an ocasional titter that escaped my fiancee and me, but for the most part, we just sat there on the couch after putting our screener in the DVD player. Then we gave it to our friend in Chicago who loves the movie, and we didn't charge her anything. It just bored me.

This isn't meant to offend or start anything. I just want to know if anyone else out there was less than pleased with this movie, or if my fiancee and I are on that limb by ourselves.

I wasn't too thrilled with this movie either. I purchased it because I heard that it was good. But when I got home, I could only stand watching 45 minutes of it before I had to shut it off. It wasn't a good movie in my opinion either. So no, you and your husband aren't wrong.

I am sorry 2 both of u but u r both extremely disillusioned. It does not matter how much u belive n ur opinion it does not change the truth. Most of us already knows what that is. Hurry up and get on board yall. Pirates of the carribean is a classic. Why else would they b making 2 sequels?

Let's face it. Not 'everybody' loved it. Just teenagers. And the occasional grown-up who just watches films for 'fun', not contents. If it wasn't for the oh so cute Orlando Bloom and the oh so sexy Johnny Depp (40 and father of two children!), the film would have been far less popular.

reply

haha holygrey! WRONG! I'm 22, so I'm not a teenager. I didn't know Orlando Bloom before I saw POTC and I didn't like Johnny before either. Besides, I'M A MOVIE STUDENT!
and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE POTC!!!!!

reply

I bet you are female though. Anyway, you can't put up whole statistics based on one person. Why do you love POTC? And what do you think of Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp now? And, if you're a movie student, what kind of movie do you think POTC was?

reply

yep I'm female. but when I watched it I heard some guy talking to his friend (both about my age) that he saw it before and loved it.

Orlando Bloom isn't a very good actor, tho he was brilliant in LotR. he's not my type too. but I love him as a person, from what I found out about him. that's cool, I'm prolly the only girl on Earth who loves Orli not because of his look :D
Johnny Depp - that's a different story. I've seen 20 movies with him - 13 since I saw POTC for the first time. he's a very, very, VERY good actor. it's a pleasure to watch him act.
Well, PotC isn't any brilliant movie, it's not like Fight Club or Shawshank Redemption, you know what I mean... but PotC DOESN'T WANT TO be such movie - it's a movie for kids, it's a comedy, it's a Disney movie! ppl who look for anything else in it usually get disappointed... but among funny "light" (<--dunno the right word in English, we say "lekki" in Polish which is "light" in English) movies PotC is my absolutely fav movie. 'cause among "light" comedies it's best of the best. great plot, great action, great script (despite few mistakes;), great Rush and Depp, great music, beautiful Keira Knightley and a lot of lines that make me burst in laugh :)

EDIT: I just noticed your "And the occasional grown-up who just watches films for 'fun', not contents"...well, in that case, as soon as you realised PotC is made just to be the movie to watch "for fun", you should have stopped watching. And you shouldn't have come here complaining about it and saying obvious things like "ppl watch it for fun"

"I love him. He's like that and sometimes it shines through, somehow. But I love him, whether or no"

reply

It's a good thing to love Orlando as a person, and I bet a certain ammount of women around the world do that, but in the end it's just based on what the papers say, and his image in general.

And I did have some fun watching this movie, I laughed, I appreciated it. But I just think you can't say it was the greatest film ever, or anything like that (===> "great plot, great action, great script"? I've seen better comical screenwriters; try charlie kaufman for example.). And that's what I've been expressing. And I can comment on any movie, or any topic I want. That is the point of these message boards.
Anyway, I didn't mean to offend you.

I love Kaufman and when there's new movie with his scritp, I go and watch it at the cinema

I don't feel offended :) and I hope I didn't offend you by last part of my previous post. I don't think POTC is the best movie ever, but I love it :) It's the matter of taste and I never thought my taste was any good... ;)

No, Becca, I'm with you. Watched it with my partner and 8 year old daughter. He and I were disappointed (though I was the only one who fell asleep!), daughter loved it.

Judging by this thread, if you post in lots of capitals and text-speak, you loved it. If you post in English with some regard to spelling and punctuation, you didn't! :-)

I don't feel lucky to be alive! I feel lucky I'm not dead. There's a difference.

I always try to write posts in good English with the correct punctuation. I am over thirty, a film lover and while I am also female, I am not 'in love' with either Orlando Bloom, or Johnny Depp - although I must admit to a bit of a crush on the character (and let me put that again so we are all clear on it: the character)Jack Sparrow. He was smashing.

I loved Pirates of The Carribean. I thought it was just a really great romp of a film and that Johnny Depp was a delight to watch.

I don't really know what all the fuss is about. It's a very specific genre. If you don't like it, appreciate the universe or the themes, or even the eye candy factor, then no amount of arguing is going to change that. And fair play too.

I thought Fargo was the most painfully dull film I've ever seen. I hated Eraserhead and I can't even be bothered sitting through things like Donnie Brasco or 21 Grammes. That's because I like what I like. Infact...we all just like what we like. I know, it was a suprise to me too.

I wouldn't judge anything by threads. Many of my friends loved the film too and the wouldn't be caught dead using terms like 'U R DUMB!' or 'PoTC totally RULLED!' (sic)

reply

Fair points, well made Kylie. (and not many spelling mistakes!). My post was a gut reaction to a few posts here, not deep or well thought out. I kind of wish I had enjoyed it more, though!

I haven't been back here in a while. lol I never expected actual responses! I've been getting the email notifications that people have responded but haven't bothered to come back because I figured it would all be, as you so so perfectly phrased it, "capitals and text-speak." One can't argue with that stuff.

However, I didn't dislike this movie because I was expecting some high-brow, intellectual comedy just because everyone spoke with accents (some less convincing than others). I was expecting a fun, lighthearted movie, and it still fell flat on its face. It just didn't do anything for me. Still doesn't. Doesn't mean the people who do like it have bad taste. I was merely stating an opinion. I'm sure I have tastes that other people don't appreciate, like Monty Python and just about any other British comedy.

Anywho, I know you were actually agreeing with me. lol I think I'm just using this one post as a big re-statement of my original post. =)

Thanks for the reply!

I don't know what you're talking about. Personally, English is the only way I know how to speak (or type) I never learned "AIM" language or whatever it might be called, but I love Pirates of the Caribbean. I saw it in the theater 4 times and I bought it the night it came out. It makes me sooo happy just to watch it. It's a chance to laugh and not have to try and decipher hidden meanings in a film. I think it's a fabulous movie for this reason:naturally it's a light carefree film, because, like someone said, it is a Disney movie. However, that is not to say that it is not well made. I am taking a video class in school, (and although I don't actually like it...it's a tad boring ;-)) and I would say that this film does fit with the standards for a well made film. In any case, it got attention from the academy award nominator people...(I don't think I termed that quite correctly)and although I know that isn't always something to judge by, usually they are accurate.
Now I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that is mine. Anyway, after that tangent, (if you made it all the way through without falling asleep) I will quickly recap. It's an unfair stereotype to say that you have to talk/type funny to like this film. I know you said that that weas the general idea from this thread, but you should know that that can't actually be true when put into perspective.

oh man, sorry...it was a bad day...I hope you don't hate me.

Johny depp!im sure orlando is cute too.

This is also not meant to offend or start anything. But I believe the reason some people did not LOVE this movie is because they lack any imgaination or adventure. You have to watch this movie with the heart of a child or just a lover of Johnny Depp. Heaven bless him!

okay, to Hollywoodchic...I just totally forgot your name, sorry! But the fact that the movie wouldn't have done half as well if they hadn't picked leads as good looking as they are, naturally I agree with you. But isn't that the point? Gore and Jerry knew how to cast it so that it would have charm and appeal...and let's face it, it worked, even if you ddin't like it, cause there was a lot of poeple who did.
