Gender discovered

I'm vaguely confused about the scene where they discover she's a girl. Did she already have her menstrual cycle? 12 years old seems young but not impossible. But how did it coincide with them hanging her in the well? was she there for as many days as it took for her period to come? huh?

reply

I was a bit confused as to why they even hanged her inside of the well in the first place. It seemed like punishment for the fact that she couldn't get down out of the tree by herself.

I don't necessarily think 12 is young for a girl to have her cycle, and I doubt she was there (in the well) for more than just a few hours. I don't imagine they would leave a child hanging in a well overnight. Maybe her period came suddenly, or perhaps it was her first one ever. If she was already having her cycle, she and her mother definitely would have done something to conceal it as best as they could. So, it must have been a surprise.

reply

I thought that her bleeding had something to do with whatever they were hanging her with... I thought it was some kind of injury. Her period crossed my mind too...Maybe the scene with the tree and the scene with the hanging aren't temporally connected, and they're torturing her because she got her first period like in her sleep and that's how they discovered her. I still think it was just blood from being hurt by the hanging though, it didn't really look right for the other thing.

reply

I also thought that amd...I thought that perhaps they just wanted blood between her legs so they made it happen with the ropes...perhaps they thought only a women's parts would bleed like that if hurt and a boy's wouldn't. We are dealing with Taliban here so I am not expecting much logic or clarity of thought anyway.

reply

I'm almost positive it was her period since it's how they figured she was a girl. Most likely it was her first and it just was the worst time for it to happen. Who knows if her mother ever told her anything about it? I was keeping my fingers crossed they'd think it was just an injruy.

reply

It WAS her period, and likely her first... hanging in that position would indeed bring that down, if she was close to time... Also, the ropes, if one were to have been round her midsection could have had something to do with it. I would say for sure though, that gravity was the culprit.

The way I saw it, Osama was hung in the well in order to "toughen" up after not being able to descend from the tree on her own. When up in the tree, she was afraid of falling and so was hung in the well to get over the fear of falling. That's the way I understood it to be. Then, because of the severe emotional stress of being hung in the well, her menstrual period started for the first time. What a terrible ordeal for such an innocent!

reply

When I first saw the blood, I assumed it was an injury from being held above the well. But I then realized it was probably her period. Although that was probably how they discovered she was a girl, I remember the man lifting up her robe to check, which might have been precisely when they realized it.

reply

I at first thought it was simply an injury too (and wonder why the men didn't), I still think there was too much blood. So that part was kind of unrealistic, especially as beforehand in the film they'd tried to convince us that she was undeveloped enough to not be noticed when shirtless.

I am pretty sure that it was her first period-and it came at inconvenient moment, it was how they discovered her Gender. it sort of reminded me of that scene in Carrie.
Do I look as if I care?

reply

What happened in "Carrie"?

It is an interesting theory that they already knew...I hadn't thought about that.

reply

Actually, I think the men who ran the school (Shabibi and the guy wiht the black turban) suspected she was a girl while she was climbing the tree. They were discussing it as he shaved his beard and watched her squeal as she discovered she couldn't get down from the tree. That is why he delivered the genital cleansing lesson right then--to get her out of her clothes. While he sits in the bathtub and tells her to wash, you can tell he's privy. He's enjoying it and taunting her. The look on his face appears to be one of knowing patience. I think they put her in the well pretty much certain something was afoot, but wanting to punish her more.

Then again, it would seem if they even remotely expected "he" was a "she," they would have outed her right then and there. Just a thought.

whoa that's really cool that you were able to figure that out... does the old husband of Osama dislike her? it's interesting that she had her period but no breasts...
the scene in Carrie is pretty awful menstruation scene.
Do I look as if I care?

reply

Are you ignorant enough to think a girl needs breasts to menstruate? Ok then. Some girls are A cups all their lives.

Does he dislike her? What on earth could you mean?

reply

It is not ignorant, it is the natural order of things...one does not necessarily need large breasts, (of course there are a lot of Kate Moss types out there)however she had not even buds or larger nipples...there is a difference between a prepubescent chest and the flattest of developed chests. She also would have had underarm hair by the time she menstruated...it is just the order of puberty, hair, breasts, then menstruation. Granted today in USA due to hormones in food girls are getting breasts at like 7, before pubes, but that is another story all together.

reply

it's interesting that she had her period but no breasts...

All women menstruate, but not every woman has breasts. Some women are flat-chested their entire life.

reply

That was a different man...they just both had white hair really.

reply

i couldn't believe it was her period too,
because O_o oh my goodness, i couldn't realize girls could bleed so much at their first time!
but the lifting of the khameez (the tunic shirt worn by men in south/central asia) by one of the taliban confirmed this. they probably lifted it up to check.
and when osama is being chased by all the other boys, another taliban suddenly catches up to her and covers her with a burqa.
(women start to cover themselves when they have reached puberty. aka get their first period) before this, osama was still of pre-puberty age and did not cover her face like her mother did.

reply

no, before it she didn't had her menstrual cycle, because she was not wearing burqa. girls must use it when they have the first menstrual cycle.

so, it was just coincidence. weird, really.

I've had my period now for about five years and sometimes on day one it's so bad that it'll actually drip on the ground. Once I bled all the way through to my pants--and that was on day two or three. It's entirely possible that she could bleed that much.

reply

Yes, a girl's first period can be quite heavy and, at least in my experience, stress can make it heavier. Take the fact that she had to coceal her gender or die and couple it with the fact that her mom probably hadn't told her much about getting her period and so it probably scared the hell out of her when she started to bleed--yeah, I'd say she was stressed out! Check the facts before you start rolling your eyes.

The scene is problematic because in the beginning of the movie, she clearly has breasts ( I was checking them out ). Also, it's most obvious at the end, when she is skipping in slow motion *boinggg* *boingggg*.

So I was wondering how she was going to conceal that during the bath scene but they just glossed it over.

And then she magically has her period...

reply

I'm about 90% sure that what actually happened is they suspected she was a girl and wanted to check. However, Muslim social customs don't allow them to simply look up her skirt to see what's there/not there. So they hung her in the well with a rope passing through her legs (you can see it when they pull her out) to see if it would break her hymen. Keep in mind that a girl in this society wouldn't be playing sports, running around outside, or doing anything else that would break her hymen before sex so it would be extremely unlikely for a girl her age to not have an intact hymen. I'm also pretty sure they do this to the bride at a marriage to ensure her virginity for the husband.

reply

Honey, a rope between the legs isn't going to break a girl's hymen.

I find it difficult to believe this, given the director. But then, seeing your recent posts, I don't expect an intelligent reply from you. It's been a number of years since I saw this movie, but I do believe your opinion on it is slightly distorted.

Nor should you assume that everyone who likes this movie hates Muslims - because that isn't true. I certainly don't. The first man in my life who taught me that men could be firm and enforce rules and yet be GENTLE and make one feel cared for was a teacher in my elementary school. He was a Muslim - and his behavior and example is still what I judge men by today.

When one cannot debate or render an opinion without screaming or yelling (or swearing) when there is little to no provocation, I can safely draw a conclusion.

Idiots will be idiots - every country has them. It's a sad fact of life - the human species has a high rate of "stupid".

I understand very well what you are saying. Do I like it? No, I don't. But not liking what someone has to say doesn't make them "stupid" in my book. Spewing vitriol all over a board with nothing to say, no facts to back it up - this says more.

As for the 'clean up your own backyard' - some of us are trying. These problems didn't arise over night. Nor in my lifetime. They will mostly not be FIXED in my lifetime - but I can (and do) try. So save the preaching for those who are sitting on their thumbs.

Interesting thought, although again the makers of this film could have been more realistic and had the men say something rather than have an unrealistic amount of blood. That must have been some hymen.

reply

I was confused how she could have menstruation without the slightest bit of breasts. Did not make much sense, even if she were to grow up to be quite flat chested. Definitely could have been made clearer.
