Check out 'Safar e Ghandehar' and 'Baran' for similar themes
I just saw 'Osama' last night, and I was taken by the oppression of it all. All in all, a pretty good film, and a must-see for people who have no idea of what life was like under the Taliban.
A film with very similar tone is 'Safar e Ghandehar', which I have sometimes seen titled as 'Kandahar'. It's about an Afghan-Canadian woman who travels into Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to try to connect with her sister.
The great Iranian director Majid Majidi's film 'Baran' also explores a similar theme, this time about a young Afghan girl in Iran who disguises herself as a boy to work at a construction site. This film is pure poetry.
I'd love to hear if others have seen these films.
