What the hell we're they rambling on about?

I have no idea what sort of argument Blanchett's Dylan had with that journalist. And what was Richard Gere's story about? Or Ben Whishaw's? Was there some sort of arc in the movie? Something connecting it all? I'm no Dylan fan, only listened to some albums, but I didn't get this movie.
