I know most of the questions have been answered, but I'll answer some from my point of view:
1. Someone mentioned that the shoes whistled, but I honestly have to wonder how the company invested almost a billion dollars in a new product without testing it first. I'd say that was as much the company's fault as the designer's.
2. It was probably a red-eye domestic flight, probably mid-week, so most likely pretty empty.
3. During the flight? She seemed to be very attuned to people's feelings, she probably felt he was very low and wanted to try and cheer him up. There's even a theory that Claire was actually an angel sent to help Drew.
4. His sister said she couldn't go because of the baby. I'm guessing when you have a newborn baby you can't just pick up and fly across the country in a few hours, she eventually made her way to Elizabethtown, I'm guessing after she made the proper arrangements. His mom also had to make arrangements and call people. They also wanted to have him cremated and his ashes sent to them, since his mom didn't seem to like the family, nor did they like her, she was probably trying to avoid them altogether.
5. It's supposed to be a small town, everyone knew Mitch, and they probably knew his son was coming into town for the funeral. I once drove into a really small town (it was in Mexico though, but I'm guessing small towns are pretty much the same everywhere) and kids everywhere ran towards my car and started pointing out where to go.
6. They seemed to be a very tight-knit community, and it's easier to say "oh that woman took him away from us" instead of admitting he left on his own, because then they'd have to admit that he didn't love them enough to stay there.
7. After over 30 years of being tied to one person, she probably wanted to get to know herself as a single woman again, she gave up years of her life raising children and making a home for her husband, so when he died, she had an identity crisis and wanted to learn how to be independent again.
8. She was trying to honor his memory, he was a guy who was always happy and cheerful, the life of the party, after my grandmother died, we all gathered at my house, and all her children (my dad, uncles and aunts) told stories about her, some funny, some not, but we laughed a lot the day of the funeral, there's nothing wrong with laughing. And she maybe won them over because she spoke to them from the heart and related to them more than ever I think.
7. Because they probably wanted to be all cool and be like "hey, remember that one time we played during a fire?"
8. I think there was a scene during the long phone call where one of them is plugging their phone into the charger, that's the beauty about mobile phones, not to mention they're old phones, our current phones run out of juice in half a day, but phones 10 years ago could go days without charging.
9. She had a crush on him, but at the same time she was afraid of commitment IMHO. And there's even a thing that women do sometimes where they want to hook a guy, they play the mysterious card and push a guy away after reeling him in, not all women do this, and not all guys fall for it, but some guys like the chase, I'm guessing Drew was one of those guys, I mean he was super hooked on Ellen even though she seemed to barely tolerate him.
Anyway that's my take on the situation, I've watched this movie so many times I think I've over-analyzed it way too much.
