I think he was shot in the upper chest, and with no medical treatment, it's not unlikely that he would die. But yeah, sad stuff. At least his spirit lived on =)

Well, his death not only lent a tinge of tragedy to the tale, not to mention making it absolutely clear that Earl de Darkwood and his cronies were not to be trifled with, but it was necessary at the end for Shep's spirit to return and overwhelm de Darkwood's final attack.

As for Shep dying, he seemed to be shot in or close to his chest rather than simply through the arm - a wound which, though movies might make us believe otherwise, could quite easily be very quickly fatal. He was also bleeding fairly profusely. On top of that, it appears that the physiology of the blue-skinned alien race is less robust than that of humans - Octave was put in a coma by a brief blast from an electric stun gun, a device that normally causes only temporary pain, disorientation and muscular contractions in humans.
