watched it just now.have a lump in throat.

why couldn't they get a way to make the ending happy!

reply

Unfortunately, as nice as a happy ending would have been, the reality in those days was that more often than not, the ending was not a happy one.

It is very rare in a film when the actors are so believable! I think this is one of the few films where the words 'I love you' have sounded so believable, I was almost convinced the actors were in a relationship. Damian Lewis has shown his range and talent, not only in acting, but in the roles he chooses.

A beautiful masterpiece indeed!

This is a beautiful film with wonderful performances from all involved, particularly Victoria Haralabidou and Damian Lewis. IMDB search shows that Victoria is working mostly in Australia with a new film "Blessed" about to be released.
I would like to find out more about the original story of Wives which I suppose was based on factual events. There is scanty background provided by IMDB so if anyone has more information about this film, would you like to share with the board?

Ioanna Karystiani (the scriptwriter) said in an interview that she had once visited Ellis Island, together with Pantelis Voulgaris (the director and her husband), and that there was an exposition about the immigrants in the museum. She saw there an early 20th century newspaper excerpt which mentioned a ship with brides for the immigrants arriving in the US. That's where she got the idea from, she then wrote a short story based on that and on her own family history (she said that "in every family in Greece, there is at least one immigrant", which is correct) and the idea to turn that short story into a movie script came much later...

Thank you for that explanation, I found a book of short stories by Ionna Karystiani which sounds interesting.
