Nikki's hair(for those who've seen it)

Why does Nikki's hair go grey?I dont understand. Is it symbolic?Because NO way it went grey overnight!

*Hate is baggage, life is too short to be pissed off all the time!*

reply

I dont think that it is symbolic ! I think it is possible after a very very big disappointment !!! Niki ''is'' a woman who doesn't express her self, she keeps her feelings for her , she doesn't reveal her pain so the body react.
I had heard an other example about someone who had his hair grey overnight so I think it's possible.
I doctor could explain better .

Thanks for you reply, for some reason I dont agree though, it seems too unlikely...

reply

It's not unlikely at all. It happened to a friend of mine, when he was in a very stressful condition. Voylgaris himself the other night when asked in a Greek State TV show (ERT) said that it happened to a friend when they were both in exile during the junta. This friend received a separation letter from his wife and the next day his hair were grey. He said he uses many incidents like this in his films.

wow really?ok thanks it makes better sense now. xxx

that's possible,
If you have huge shock or stress.

I recall the following story told by a fisherman in the greek island of Folegandros. In July 1956, following an earthquake of magnitude 7.5, this fisherman witnessed the sea withdrawing and the depth appearing (the famous tsunami of Amorgos). He experienced such a shosk that his hair turned all white within seconds...

Rather impossible according to this article on the "Straight Dope" column: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_315b.html

The key sentence is: "The problem with sudden whitening, of course, is that hair is dead tissue. So you'd think it would be incapable of becoming entirely white until it grows out from the roots, a process that takes weeks".

reply

i think you re just loosing the meaning of the movie..its not about hair its about emotions.. white hair doesn't only show sorrow but it simbolizes that Niki became an old woman so quickly when she realised that she would live the rest of her life with someone that she doesnt love.so thats not life for her .its like a quick death.

Yeah I suppose that makes sense; what puzzled me was why didn't her eyebrows go grey too? Right well maybe I've looked into the details a bit far. Lovely film though, I liked it very much.

reply

I think you meant to say it's like a SLOW death, not a quick one. Makes better sense.

I posted that one!

First she was naive with a hair....until now......I thinks she's different after she fall in love - just in my thoughts!

I just the saw this film last week (loved it!), but the hair thing puzzled me, too. I was thinking it's symbolic, but stress thing if it's plausible makes sense. I'd be pretty stressed too if I had to part with beautiful Norman!

It is impossible for some one's hair to turn white (or grey) over night. But it can look like it has. What can happen is a person who's hair already has a lot of grey hair, can suddenly lose a lot of hair that increases the percentage of grey, making it look like their hair has gone grey over night. In other words they may have had 30% grey hair and 70% dark hair suddenly become more like 60% grey and 40% dark (and much thinner). I dont think I have explained it very well, but various things can cause hair to suddenly fall out. For example I once had a very high fever, and the hair that was in its 'resting' phase fell out (which was 30% of my hair) and so I my hair suddenly became very thin, which also makes it look lighter. And from then on, the hair growing back would be white as well.

But that is not the point, it is a wonderful movie, and excellent symbolism.

I will have to disagree with this theory about grey hair. It happened to my closest friend after she attended the exhumation of her father. Her hair turned to grey overnight and I can assure you that its volume remained the same... She had a lot and very long hair that stayed the same, yet in grey color. She was 19 years old.........!

reply

May be by the time she reached Newyork shores she had no more hair dye left with her so her real hair color became apparent.

It happenned to my great-grandmother when her husband died under tragic circumstances. A lot of her hair became grey overnight. My grandmother has told me that.

Your snide remarks in an otherwise nice discussion about a great film are not welcome. Also, learn to spell.

reply

Correct me where i am wrong in my spelling and try to remain tolerant to different thoughts as forums of movies or even of great movies were never meant to be sacrosanct.

I apologise in advance for not mentioning the symbolism behind this (which I think was its primary aim) but can we look at this question scientifically? Only one person has offered an explaination, which was the one I had heard before anyway (about pre-existing grey hair, coloured hair then falling out from shock). For all those who don't agree, and I see it is the majority of the panel, please offer an alternative. It is impossible for hair to simply change colour in an instant, it is essentially dead (this is why it doesnt hurt). Even bleaching by the sun or chlorine takes a while.

reply

I don't know any scientific explanation, if there is one, but I do remember a film, long ago, where the same plot device was used.

I thought it was a reaction to Haro's suicide?
