what is the alternate ending?

People keep talking about it but nobody says what it's like.

LOL, I know right? Anybody want to enlighten us about what the alternate ending is about? Pretty please?

reply

buy the dvd on tuesday and see for yourself! :O)

reply

Touché. But nah, I'll just wait for someone to post about it, I'm too poor to spend money just on finding out about the alternate ending. :P

Reposting this over here...

SPOILER ALERT!

The released ending is what you'd imagine: she figures out he's not her husband, she freaks out, he tries to kill her.

The alternate ending however, really appealed to me, because it's more psychological (and yeah, more romantic): Jess realizes that Roman is not Ryan... but that he really is trying to be LIKE Ryan... he wants to be a better man for her. So it seems that she's willing to look the other way and continue on with him.

I found that fascinating.

reply

hmmm interesting.. but does Roman hit her in the alternate ending? and what about Roman's girlfriend.. does he kill her in the alternate version?

you were just SCii Fiied..!!!

reply

There is no hitting, and he doesn't kill the girl. Also, he never finds out that she knows his secret.

And nobody will sound the alarm.

wow.. this is not alternate ending.. this is like an alternate movie that they shot.. very different from the original then..!!!

It's not that different overall--before the very ending, it's really a few minor changes, scenes filmed with different outcomes, a few things explained to the audience rather than the audience having to infer them . . . it's just the last 10 minutes or so that are very different, but that's just an alternate ending. I wouldn't say it's like an "alternate movie".

I also liked the alternate ending better, but I liked the theatrical ending, too, and liked the film overall. The theatrical ending definitely seemed to be done to make it fit more neatly into a genre ("thriller" obviously) and to pander to what the folks in charge believe casual mall multiplex audiences will want to see . . . but then it seems like they screwed up this film's chances of playing much at mall multiplexes anyway, and many people seem to prefer the alternate ending, so if they would have handled the marketing and distribution better and didn't try to predict what would be more successful, they would have been better off in the long run. It would be nice if the film industry didn't try to second-guess audiences so much AND if they'd not assume that most folks are morons who just want more of the same old.

I actually don't think it's clear that he never finds out that she knows. Maybe I was tainted by the original ending where he tells her that they would have been better off pretending because they were both "happy." I feel like the look on his face in the alt ending was one of relief that even though she probably knew, she was willing to continue the pretense.

reply

Thanks for posting that. It sounds way better than the released ending.

reply

Yep, sounds way better than the released ending. Just watched the DVD and thought it was so bad that I didn't even check the extra features. Like a bad Lifetime Channel movie, and SMG's acting was particularly bad. But now I'll go back and watch the alternate ending.

I only rented it for Lee Pace. If you haven't seen him in "The Fall," you're in for a treat.

Edit: Meh. Watched the alternate ending and still wasn't impressed. Oh, well, some rentals are good and some aren't.

I really liked the movie and loved Lee's performance. I will admit it is not a great thriller, but I think it is a pretty cool psychological drama/romance. I like the intensity and well, Lee can act.And I have had The Fall treat;)

I think the alternate ending would be perfect. And it would no longer be average. I kinda would want to shoot another alternative with (SPOILERS, obviously)
Ryan waking up. And Roman not giving up the act. Hımmmmm....

well, xstaticu; then you should be fine because you get exactly that with the original ending anyway. I just thought the alternate ending is really anti-Hollywood, and therefore appreciated it (it is the original ending of the original movie anyway).

Obviously, it wouldn't exactly be a normal or healthy situation but then again nothing about their life was healthy after Ryan remained in coma while Roman woke up. She slept with him and she is having his baby. She was willing to think Roman was Ryan so that she wouldn't have to let go of Ryan. Roman pretended to be his brother so that he could be with her. If Roman doesn't kill Casey in the alternate version, and Ryan never wakes up, staying with Roman is the best solution for both of them. In my opinion anyway.

Actually, they took Ryan off life support in the alternate ending, he died, and they cremated him so Ryan is no longer a problem at least in the physical sense. And because they did show Casey and never went with the idea of her missing, you never have to assume Roman killed her. The only obstacle is his lying about who he is, and Jess was cool with it, so I consider it a happy ending. Not a perfect ending but perfect is boring. Anyways, it's way better than having crazy psycho brother's baby while wating for a husband who will never wake from a coma. It is an ending that makes you think more than the wrapped-up typical Hollywood ending.

True. I thought the alternate ending was better. Alternate ending or no, it's still a very bad movie. I was reading about the Korean version and it sounds just as bad but even cheesier :^/

I just watched this movie tonight on DVD and thought the last act was utter crap, which made me think I'd wasted an hour and a half of my life. Then I watched the alternate ending and I kinda love this film now lol. Not that it's all of a sudden The Godfather but the alt ending drastically improved it.

From the early scenes before the accident, I think it shows clearly that Roman loved Jess but was so stuck in his role of loser/dickhead that he couldn't get out. The accident gave him the opportunity to get out of it and go after the life he always wanted. He manipulated Jess into being with him, granted, but he did truly love her. With Jess, I got the feeling at the beginning that she was wary of him but also drawn to him (the scene where he held her necklace made me think something was going on with them and that's before the accident). When she lost Ryan and Roman started to act like him, I think she knew deep down that of course it was bullcrap. She wasn't a stupid girl, just deeply grieved. She let herself believe him to dull the pain of losing her husband. Then over the course of the months she was with Roman, she was happy, no matter what she believed. Which is why when she found out that he of course wasn't Ryan and her illusion was shattered, she realised that regardless of what lies had been said to make the relationship, she was happy with him. She had used him to get over the misery of grieving her husband and found that she could be happy with Roman. Which is why she decided to stay with him, she did love him by the end I think. Totally messed up love story lol but a love story nonetheless, my favourite kind.

Adler - Sarah was excellent and displayed restraint in the movie. I can't take anything you wrote seriously.

It's not 10 minutes though, it's more like 30 minutes.

Yes! The alternate ending is so much better and follows the original movie a lot more, plus there is so much more of the adorable lee pace.

The Korean original, Addicted, is really a lot better and has more detail about Roman's motivations. The Korean ending is the American alternate ending. I recommend it. It's more romance than thriller, though.

I agree.

I have to agree that the alternate ending was a lot better. I think part of what made it so good was that Ryan dies, and is cremated! He's gone forever and she only has Roman now. So she deludes herself into thinking she can make it work with him. She's already pregnant, already gave up her job, and hes changed. He's sweet, he's loving, he's part of what her husband was and to not lose her husband completely she's willing to accept Roman. Of course shes completely messed up in the head, as is he, and that poor baby is going to need a lot of therapy if he ever finds out...

LOVE the alternate ending. It developed both characters more unlike most obvious and expected thriller plots. It was sweet and more intelligent on the writer's part but super eerie b/c it applies the tag line,'How far would you go for a second chance?' to Jess as well. Makes them quite a dysfunctional pair/family.

The released ending is only okay b/c Ryan's body is still hooked up and Casey went missing. The fact that she was carrying his baby makes Jess look even more fickle for turning on him so easily. If she wasn't so calm after slowly walking out of her room and was super pissed off and angry instead it could have led to that end, maybe. It didn't make sense that Jess was really impulsive after walking past the nursery and looking at the baby-rocker he made to make a dash for the door. It wasn't written well. Actually I'm back to saying the released ending was NOT okay.

BTW, Lee Pace/Roman's adoring husband was more enjoyable than Ryan's.Also, I kept thinking as I watched it that it wasn't 100% Roman or 100% Ryan at all times. Any thoughts on that?

I want to suggest it to friends who would love it but I'd rather just make them watch the alternate ending. If there is a way to buy the movie with the alternate ending cut together with the rest of the movie, that'd be great. The version included in the dvd was of a poorer quality and they enlarged the frame- I don't know how to cut it together myself. If only...lol

Eima get Addicted, the Korean movie! That's one way to get the alternate ending. :)

reply

@ eima: re -- 100% Roman versus Ryan.

I kept thinking that Roman, at least in the beginning, was thinking to himself: so, what would Ryan do? Ryan would tend the roses. Ryan would be nice to Norman. Ryan would apologize to Casey. Ryan would make Jess love him. And so, he did all of those things. Yeah, he had to lie to Jess to make it happen; but he seized his chance; maybe, in some part of him, he really did try to convince himself that Ryan's memories were his, that he could completely leave Roman behind him (like in that scene in the workshed: "I can feel him sometimes...I have his heart...but he's gone forever.")

I think once he realized that he had a chance to be someone else, his wish at the beginning of the movie, to be his brother, he took it. The movie, in my mind, is sort of his transformation from Roman to his version of Ryan, not 100% either way. If that makes sense. :)

I agree with you about a DVD with just the alt ending. I'd buy that.

reply

I did cut it together myself and yeah it is not perfect because the different quality but I ignore it to get the ending I want. If you can rip the movie off the dvd (there is free dvd ripping software on the internet) and then cut and paste in something like Windows Movie Maker. Cut just after Jess and Roman make love for the first time and Roman wakes up from his nightmare, that's where the alternate ending begins.

I agree and it worked much better! The movie was still weak due to lack of character development and pacing (too many scenes just chopped up) but the alternate ending is much more imaginative!
