Does anybody else think the alternate ending (version) is a lot better?

While the version shown in theaters and on DVD tries to pass this movie off as a "horror" movie (it is NOT), the alternate "ending" (which is in fact the last 30 minutes of the movie completely changed) featured as an extra on the DVD is so much better and suited to the general mood of the movie, and on top of that ,it doesn't leave any unexplained loose ends as the "regular" version does.

reply

so what is the difference in the alternate ending?

reply

Most of the reviews have said the same thing..that the alternate ending should have been in the final cut of the film.....where did you get a hold of the dvd? its still not out for a week...im jealous! ive been waiting forever too see it!

reply

Amazon has this movie on sale now. Just ordered it today, be here tomorrow March 5

The alternate version of the film is WAAY better, and was supposed to be the true version of the film. I've seen the movie that this one is based off of (unfortunately I can't recall the name at the moment, and I want to say it was Korean...?) and the alternate version is the same exact ending as the original. I can only guess the studio didn't think American audiences would want to see a movie that would actually make them think about the true meaning of love and mortality and decided to give it a horrible slasher/sci-fi ending. It truly enrages me, but thankfully on the DVD you can see the movie for what it was really supposed to be.

And actually this movie doesn't hit stores (or it's not supposed to) until next Tuesday. I work in a DVD store though, which comes with a perk of being able to watch DVDs before they come out :) And let me just add that the cover art for the DVD is HORRIBLE and in no way reflects the movie or the plot.

reply

I was under the impression it wasn't suppose to come out until next week also. But I ordered off of Amazon on March 4th and it arrived today March 5th

reply

Oh cool..I ordered yesterday too! Hope mine comes today! I've already watched it twice..but still want to see the alternate ending. Are you in SoCal kellyraebrown? If so, chances are I will get mine today too! Yay!

reply

Yes, this movie is a remake of a korean movie called "Addiction" and the alternate ending is the true ending of this movie. I have no idea why they would bother remaking a movie only to completely ruin it with a made up, off script ending??!! it completely ruins the movie in my opinion

I also thought the "alternate ending" version (which probably ought to just be called the "alternate movie" version!) was better. It certainly makes the audience think much more about the interactions of the characters and the decisions they have made based on the circumstances they are in.

The alternate version also greatly changes the audience's perception of Lee Pace's character, making the character (I thought) much more sympathetic and less evil.

It was interesting to see the two versions... but I do think the alternate one is better... at least from a "making you think" perspective!

reply

so what is the alternate ending? it seems nobody wants to talk about it!

SPOILER ALERT!

The released ending is what you'd imagine: she figures out he's not her husband, she freaks out, he tries to kill her.

The alternate ending however, really appealed to me, because it's more psychological (and yeah, more romantic): Jess realizes that Roman is not Ryan... but that he really is trying to be LIKE Ryan... he wants to be a better man for her. So it seems that she's willing to look the other way and continue on with him.

I found that fascinating.

reply

I think the alternate ending would better be interpreted as her finding out that Roman really isn't Ryan, but because she can't let Ryan go, she's willing to stick by Roman as he is the closest thing she has to her dead husband. So it's not really that she is in love with Roman or that she appreciates him trying to be like Ryan, as much as it is her not wanting to let go of her husband. The original Korean movie was called "Addicted," referring to this woman's addiction to the feelings her husband gave her and not wanting to let that go.

This film was originally called Addicted as well. I think they changed it when they decided to change the ending.

and did roman know that she found out about him? what did he do?

I don't think he knew that she found out the secret.

And nobody will sound the alarm.

I'm SURE he knew..

the look they shared said everything..! x)

and she asks how is it going and he answers that he liked it and he gotta keep working on it.. with huge double meaning.. he looked very afraid that she would reject him.. it's like he said he liked being a good guy and he would keep trying hard.. he very carefully asks what she thinks about it and she says she thinks it's good.. they weren't even looking at the cradle (the supposed subject of their conversation), they were looking at each other eyes all the time.. very romantic.. he doesn't want to frighten her and says that she knows he's always there for her and she answers she knows.. and then they both breath relieved together.

the perfect ending!!

i just got that the second time i watched, but it's very clear to me now..

reply

That scene was extremely well done. She looks so serious and his smile subtly fades and that is the moment he knows that she knows...and then the conversation, ostensibly about the cradle, but loaded with meaning like you said...and he looks so relieved and you can believe in that moment that he can keep being a good guy, but at the same time it's pretty twisted.
Definitely the better ending, it elevates the whole movie.

SPOILER ALERT!

I COMPLETELY agree. The released ending has been played out again and again on in other films: she figures it out, he tries to kill her. Boring.

The great thing about them including the alternate ending, is that it picks up 3/4 of the way through the movie and continues til the end, so it could almost be a "Choose Your Own Adventure!" type movie... just watch whatever ending you like better.

reply

These are my thoughts exactly. I really wish they would release it with the alternate ending in place of the crappy real ending.

I seriously watched it once all the way through with the real ending and now I just stop and switch it to the alt ending when I get to the part where he wakes from his nightmare.

@moonsandals: I'm glad I'm not alone with doing this; I think the movie would've done a lot better with the alternate ending as the theatrically released one. The theatrical one was so disjointed from the rest of the movie it almost felt 'tacked on', for me at least. But, I do have to admit, that I've seen the Korean movie first, so perhaps I could only see them 'hollywoodying it up' and wrecking what was a thoughtful and interesting story. Some foreign movies really don't need to be messed with to make them appeal to western viewers - this movie is a case in point.

SPOILERS

Having seen the original Korean film Addicted first, I understood what they were trying to do with the alternate ending. However, for some reason, I bought it more in the original. Maybe because the brother character was more sympathetic in the original? Been a year since I've seen it, so I can't remember. Just seemed like in this version, the brother not only lied to her, but was still a violent jerk (killed his ex), so...I guess I just hate it when the manipulative douche gets the girl ;-)

So I actually preferred this movie's original ending. Its the more romantic ending for me (maybe because I'm a guy? lol). I loved how her husband was still hanging on in his coma, like he knew he had unfinished business. And he psychically stalled his brother just enough for his wife to fight back. Like his love for her is so strong he can protect her even when he's not there. Using his last bit of strength before letting go, knowing she's safe. That's more romantic to me.

Lastly, totally unrelated, but it was cool that they used the same wedding rings my wife and I have. To be fair, she noticed before me :-)

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the alternate ending. I think Roman was just always in love with her and took the unfortunate circumstances of the accident and used it to create a new and better life for himself. I think he REALLY changed. If I remember correctly, in the alternate ending they removed the part where he kills the ex? ... so he's not evil.

Oh, and I DO think he knows that she knows he's not Ryan ... but neither of them are going to talk about it and they're just going to choose to live happily ever after ( :

I just watched the movie and both endings last night. It kind of seems like he still does kill the ex in the alternate ending -- they show the scene where he has a "flat tire" and is covering up whatever was in the back of his truck -- when I saw that the first time I figured he had her dead body back in the truck. So the fact that they left that few seconds in the alternate ending (as well as his Roman-esque sneer towards the ex when she comes upon them in the workroom earlier) makes it feel like he still did something to her.

I would've like the alternate a lot better if they'd taken those couple things out (his sneer and him fixing the cover over the body in the back of the truck) because I liked the fact that Jess knew it was Roman but accepted him because he was trying to be better for her -- but when it comes down to it, it still seemed like he was a murderer. D:

I think both endings had their good and bad points.

I don't think he kills the GF in the alternate ending, because the GF never disappears in that version. Remember that when Jesse goes to Casey's house she actually finds her there, unlike in the released version where Casey's house is open but nobody is there.

Anyway, I agree with everybody else, the alternate ending was better that the regular one. Everything makes more sense.

I like the alternate ending So Much Better!!
Not only was it good, but the original ending just sucked, in my opinion.

I have so many questions with the original ending, maybe someone can help me out. I watched this movie with my husband and my mother last night and we all thought the same couple of things didn't make any sense.

1. Ok, so Romand was just pretending to be Ryan the whole time, fine. But, then what was with the whole being connected to Ryan thing all about? When Ryan had seizures, Romand had chest pains, and they were somehow physically connected? I thought we had just determined that they were NOT physically connected, so this doesn't make any sense then!

2. At the end of the movie, after Romand is dead and she finds out that Ryan is going to pull through and live, we have a ghosts hands come behind her, to put on her necklace for her. So, this isn't her husband, because he is still alive...I'm assuming this is supposed to by Romand? If so, why does she smile when he says "here let me get that for you". This doesn't make sense either!

This is why I like the alternate ending. It makes sense, there isn't any physical connection with the brothers (because there really ISN'T any, he is PRETENDING) but at the same time, the ending still leaves you wondering...

@shannonvirgo

That's what I wanna know too! Why do they insist on forcing these psychical connections on us and all the supernatural-blah-blah when clearly all it's about is just a guy who's faking it to get the girl!
The hands-thing didn't make sense to me either. So... there's a ghost? Where did he come from? If it's not a possession - what's with all the supernatural crap then? That pissed me off, to be honest. They could've left all that out AND used the alternate ending and this movie would've been an 8/10 for me.

Other than that, Joel och Simon - ni gjorde ett finfint jobb i övrigt. Tack! :)

Though I love the Alternate Ending so much more, I think I need to be fair to the original. I think at the end it was saying the connection wasn't between the brothers but between Jess & Ryan. Ryan fought back enough to come back and hurt Roman in order to give Jess time to recover, as if he was there actually phsyically defending her. And the seizures he had were hurting Roman, trying to get him to stop messing with Jess. Finally, the end with Ryan tying the necklace, so as to say though he's in a coma, their (Jess & Ryan's) physical-spiritual-romantic connection is never broken.

A bit of a stretch but for a movie trying to say their is something supernatural (which is what they were doing for theatrical release), then it works. Just the supernatural element between the brothers is the mislead, the one between the husband and wife is the truth.

The look he has fixing the cover in the back of the truck creates suspense for first time viewing but if you watch the alternate ending, it makes sense b/c that's the wood he got to make the baby rocker. Remember? Jess checks the bed of his truck and finds wood?
I had to think about it a few minutes before I realized the connection. So if you accept the alternate ending, he doesn't have to be a murderer.

He sneered? where?

Thank God I found this thread otherwise I would've never seen the alternate ending! WOW! It was amazing!!!

I finished the original movie feeling cheated, like there was so much missing.

The alternate ending was perfect, I don't understand why they would remove that, it was brilliant. It made the movie memorable and heart warming. I'm so glad they kept it on the DVD, I hope they realised what a bad decision it was to change the ending.

Oh and Lee Pace is one of the hottest men on the planet, he's so underrated :(

because i read this thread before renting the dvd (i know, i know, but i didn't think my blockbuster would have it and i was impatient), i didn't even watch the original ending. i think i made the right choice.
