I just started OTH and I love it. I'm only in the beginning of the first season, but I'm still a little confused on who Haley is. Is she Lucas's sister or is she just a friend?

Haley's his best friend since they were little kids. Basically his sister.

I'm watching it for the first time as well. I'm just into season 4. Also, Hayley isn't Lucas's sister. She's been his best friend since they were little kids.
