Some episodes are too extreme.

A lot of episodes have extremely dark storylines, it's too much. I used to be able to cope with it all those years ago, but now that i'm more careful about what i watch iv'e only watched a few episodes from each series.

You have to be careful what you allow in your mind, too much dark TV Series and dark movies can make you depressed. Not saying that Cold Case is depressing, but some episodes are hardcore.

One episode sticks out for me, as being more than I can handle.
I dont know the title or year, but a woman is abducted from a parking lot. I think it was her engagement party.

The killer is a man who abducts women and keep them alive while mentally torturing them. He shows them videos and/or photos of their children and loved ones.

I have four children and a husband, and I cry only to think about being in such a hopeless, terrifying situation. For a mother, to daily be reminded of the hell your children go through without you.

Nope, will not watch that one again.

I have no problem watching murders, but for some reason this episode gets to me, although I know there are many heartbreaking histories in Cold Case.

I get what you are saying. Iv'e personally stopped watching this TV Show completely, it's nothing but darkness. I'm a Christian and when i watch 100% dark shows like this a verse always comes to mind which is "to focus on whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, whatever is praiseworthy, whatever is pure, whatever is right". (Philippians 4:8). I still watch thrillers, but there's some things that are just way too dark that it crosses the line. The detectives in this TV Show are admirable, but the show itself outweighs that due to all of the topics being so evil. I personally love thriller tv shows and thriller movies, but when it's extremely morbid like that is when it doesn't feel right to watch.

I love the show. It is emotionally charged and upsetting but it really causes you to empathise and understand so much of the emotional pain. What I love about the show is the darkness isn't "evil". They show the very human reasons behind the murders.

How do you cope with the darkness in the Bible? It's a book full of murder, genocide and hate (especially the old testament). But it also has lots of hope and light. That's how you should view everything.

There are certain things that I refuse to watch now also. I dumped The Walking Dead because it's torture porn. I love Game of Thrones but I look away at the gory scenes. I've never really understood gory films either.

Bauer vs. Bourne, that is the question.

I'd say this is actually one of the least. Criminal Minds and SVU are far worse in this regard.

And so Governor Devlin, because even the cost of freedom can be too high, I REFUSE your pardon!

reply

I always found it pretty tame actually compared to other crime shows or many real life crimes. Criminal Minds too considering it's about serial killers.

reply

I agree that it's tame compared to other crime shows. A lot of the murders happen in the heat of the moment and many killers are at least sort of sympathetic.

Plus several times it turns out that characters had better intentions than originally thought if that makes sense. For example, In Wilkommen, the victim had left his fiancee for his costar but we find out in the end that he regretted it and hoped to reconcile with her. Also, it originally looked like the victim in Family had left his girlfriend and newborn daughter but it turns out he hadn't.

I'm a Christian too. I don't see how you watch thrillers since they're so evil. And I agree with your opinion regarding one episode. The one where the Black woman was dating the white milk man and then he let his friends gang rape her and then he killed her. I haven't seen that episode in years but I still remember it. Just thinking about it..........

Butta25,

Yes that is one episode that I am good on.
No multiple viewing for me.

I finally managed to find a way to view this show again and whilst a series focused on murder/manslaughter/death can make for extremely disturbing viewing at times, most of the episodes are just simply excellent story-telling.

Lovers killing one another, adults scheming and doing wrong, even psychos hunting down women, don't make me feel too bad - sure, I cry during the moments the loved ones find out their friend or family member's fate and I empathise and imagine how I'd feel...but the ones that I cannot watch - the ones I switch off two minutes after the episodes starts - are the ones where a child dies....I just simply cannot stand it. Those ones are just too painful and upsetting for me - it ceases to be morbidly entertaining and just becomes distressing.

What does keep me coming back however is the music, the flashbacks and 'seeing' the older/younger versions of the characters....not to mention the star-spotting a 15 year old show allows. So may hugely successful actors got their start on a Cold Case episode!
