Elimination Disclaimer

i didn't watch BMB when it was originally broadcast last summer by Bravo. to which i have greatly enjoyed viewing the dvds of the complete 1st season. which brings me to the point of this message. at the end of each of the 6 episodes this disclaimer appears on the screen-"the producers have consulted with the
leading man on his elimination choices but the final decison has been made totally by him". does that mean the producers somehow influenced James to
choose one guy over another but left the choice up to him? please can anyone
out there explain the disclaimer to me. many thanks in advance.

The deck was stacked each week so that when the selections were made as to who would stay and who would leave, there would always be straight guys left in the mix right up until the end. In the first episode, James got to pick (from the ENTIRE group) who was eliminated. After that point, the men were placed in groups by the TV executives and James had to pick one from each group to be eliminated. Here's how that went:

Episode 2
At the start of this episode, the ratio of straights to gays is equal. The show groups the guys in a way that will guarantee a similar ratio after the eliminations.

Jim, Franklin, Sean and Dan – s, s, s, s - Jim is eliminated, leaving s, s, s
Wes, Michael, Robb and Paul – g, s, g, s - Paul is eliminated, leaving g, s, g
Matt, Brian, Marc and Darren - g, g, g, g - Marc is eliminated, leaving g, g, g

This guarantees that at least one straight guy is eliminated from the first group.
This guarantees that at least one gay guy is eliminated from the third group.
One of either orientation is eliminated from the third group.
This leaves the overall ratio nearly equal.
If they had put two straight guys and two gay guys in each group, it would have been possible for James to eliminate three of the straight guys in one episode and they wouldn't have wanted that to happen.

Episode 3
For the elimination, the men are again grouped to guarantee that at least two straight guys would make it to the next round.

Sean, Robb, Michael – s, g, s - Michael is eliminated, leaving s, g
Darren, Brian, Matt – g, g, g - Matt is eliminated, leaving g, g
Wes, Franklin, Dan – g, s, s - Dan is eliminated, leaving g, s

Episode 4
For this round, the straight men are once again grouped so that that one of them will make it to the final round.

Brian and Darren - g, g - Darren is eliminated, leaving g
Wes and Robb - g, g - Robb is eliminated, leaving g
Sean and Franklin - s, s - Sean is eliminated, leaving s

This leaves one straight and two gay guys from whom James can pick his mate.

Well done, jay-863. I might also add that I suspect the producers pushed for certain contestants to be chosen. For example, it's pretty obvious right from the first episode that James wasn't real interested in Dan, and he even expresses disdain for him in episode 2, yet Dan lasted until episode 3- he was entertaining and it was pretty clear they wanted him kept around as long as possible.

I just watched this show for the first time and was wondering why they split everyone off into groups during elimination, but that makes perfect sense.

I totally agree about Dan. The fact that he was not eliminated the first night was crazy. Jason (the Navy guy) should've stayed, and I'm sure he would've rocked the western-dance challenge.
