First medical emergency????

So Edward Walker built this village in the late 70’s, which means around 25 years have passed since then. Certainly enough time for the original villagers to bear and raise children to adulthood. During this 25 years, there were no other medical emergencies that required modern treatment??? No accidents, no heart attacks, no problems with child birth, no broken bones, no serious wounds, no childhood diseases… nothing? After more than 2 decades, the first serious medical problem is Lucius getting stabbed? That’s a little hard to believe.

It's not the first. It's just the first time the rules were broken because of it. A seven year old boy died right before the film starts. The implication is that the boy might have lived with the assistance of outside medicine. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I think the speech Hurt's character gives at dinner after the funeral refers to how much they've given up or sacrificed for their beliefs.

As Edward Walker said, what happened to Lucius was a crime, perhaps the first major crime in the history of the Village. It represented a loss of innocence for the community.

This is why rules had to be broken
