So, do you think the park ranger kept the secret, or did he go home and tell there are people living in there? And those people told people, etc.

He was bribed with a gold watch. If he wouldn't tell his supervisor at the guard station, why would he tell anyone else?

The gold watch was payment for the meds, and the supervisor made a big deal about NOT talking about it. It would be a hard thing to not tell a loved one about.

I think it is open ended. I don't think he did, but that is my personal ending.

I always figure the supervisor, knew about or had some idea of what was going and recieve a nice salary to look the other way
