so seriously, did the baby die?

reply

You know, I'm wondering that too. I think she did die physically, and maybe that scene where Jessie's holding the baby and everyone around her is connected by holding hands, maybe that was an idea of heaven for Jessie and her baby. I dont know though!

really? i thought it lived.
i figured that everyone holding hands was the town reagining unity and accepting the child into their community...
maybe i missed something.

what was the corrilation between the girl's child and the old lady whos child drowned?

reply

Llorna represented the grief of motherhood. I think that the general theme of water in the movie represented life and rebirth, along with the overall views of the baptist community.

reply

I'm pretty sure the baby died. I think the who part with the water was in her mind. What it meant, I'm not sure. But I think the baby did die.

reply

Yes, the baby is dead. That is made apparent after she delivers it they discuss it as a dead baby.

The ending shows the circularity of life with death at the center. They nakedly face outwards like a rippling from a stone cast in the waters. It is a baptisimal scene, but finds it's strength in eastern philosophy.

In the beginning of the film Lorna (the crazy woman) cries out for her babies and says "reza a oshun" Oshun in the latin american cuture is the goddess of infants and maternity and she lives in the ocean and rivers. In the old days when women had miscarriages they would give the babies up as an offering to Oshun so that she may nurture them in the after life. The significance of that and the naked bathers dancing around her with the baby is and influence of this myth It is Santeria which was brought by the yoruba tribe when they were taken from africa to the new world as slaves by the spanish.

reply

Yes, the baby died. Her sister specifically said "the baby's dead" when she asked if she could hold her.
