If the father really liked girls

How did he chose one identical twin over the other?

reply

Maybe Thomas was more willing to please his father by becoming whatever he wanted him to be. Matyas wasn't, so he rejected him. The dad was nuts, so it's anyones guess.

reply

thats reasonable, but also the mother could have tried to save matyas by giving him up....

did matyas do the cutting or did the father do it?

reply

I saw it as Thomas cut himself. Perhaps the father mentally/emotionally abused them, but wouldn't have done anything to them physically, because people are more likely to recognise the evidence of that.
And that's a good point about their mum, I'd like to believe she did make that selfless sacrifice to get Matyas out of the bad, crazy situation.

reply

i missed the first 10 min or so but why was Tomas so angry at Matyas if he cut himself LOL

reply

He was angry and frustrated from all the effort to try and keep his fathers love. And maybe he inherited the fathers mental illness anyway.
Once he was older, Thomas realised Matyas had the stuff in life he had unwittingly robbed himself of when he castrated himself - a wife and children. So he was out to take those from Matyas.

you gave away too much of the plot ;) LOL

i was talking generally so people can get a sense of it without giving away too much ;)

I edited my headings. Thanks, I forgot to warn of spoilers.
Do you think the father accused Matyas of cutting Thomas because he couldn't bear his guilt of knowing he drove Thomas to castrate himself?
European films are great with the emotional stuff, they aren't afraid to try and understand that part of people, and find the truth. I guess their cultures have a rich history of learning about that stuff though so it makes sense they'd explore it.

Don't stress too much, as you can see this is unfortunately (IMO) a little seen film with few people posting.

The father (and probably mother) are clearly unhinged in that they blamed Matyas for Thomas's castration and never understood (or cared about) his psychological issues. Then of course they proceeded to dump him in the orphanage.

Considering his childhood and background, I think Matyas turned out pretty normal.

So this wasn't explained more fully? I watched the film in French and assumed I missed something regarding the parents' relationship with Matyas but it sounds as though I didn't.

Just a little!
I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

I watched it in French with English sub-titles Poppy and the father didn't explain any thing to Matyas, only physically assaulting him (after 25 odd years). You see the mother briefly in flashbacks, but she doesn't say much either. So yes, you have to make assumptions about their reasons for behaving as they did.
