novel?

Is there an english language version of this novel available to purchase anywhere?

reply

Not that I know of. I sometimes go to a bar that the author frequents, and if I ever run into him I'd like to run the idea by him. Of course, I'm too busy with other translating gigs at the moment to tackle it anyway.

As for the original Japanese version of the novel, I had a hard enough time tracking that down on Yahoo! JP's auction site.

andyviana162,
Sorry I didn't catch this post and get back to you sooner. In my experience, there are two things a translator needs:
1) the ability to read the original language
2) the ability to put that into the target language in an entertaining manner

So, in addition to foreign language studies, I'd also suggest writing and literature courses in your native language. Reading is one of the best ways to become a good writer and translator. The rest is mostly just practice--getting in the trenches and grinding it out. Good luck!

I would be very interested in getting a copy of the novel. I know it is nearly 3 years since you had a hard time finding it, so it is probably even harder to find now, but the original Japanese text is fine. I do not know what title to look up during my search, or what Japanese characters I might need to use to search for the book. Any help you can give in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

The Japanese paperback has been available since 2008:

It's an amazing novel, at least a thousand times better than the movie.
If you do read Japanese, try the author's other works as well.
He's a great writer/rock singer!!!

I agree that the Japanese novel was far better than the film. It was definitely worth the trouble I went to in getting a copy (of the hardcover, as it happened).
