What do you say to people who haven't seen it?

My facebook picture is a screen shot from the movie. Someone asked me what the dickens (obviously not the word they used) my picture was. After my initial amazement, I calmly explained the movie to them, then linked the I Hate Everything review.

How do you usually handle Room virgins?

My boyfriend asks "why would I WANT to watch a terrible movie?" It is hard to explain as "it's funny that it's bad" doesn't really capture it.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

Yeah, it's a tough sell. It's even difficult to describe to people who do watch bad movies. I was trying to explain it to my friend the other day who likes crappy horror movies and things like Miami Connection. Halfway through I just sort of gave up and said, 'you really just have to see it.. and with an audience.'

I have brought other friends to screenings after describing it, and it never disappoints. As much as I sell it as a ridiculous absurdity nonsense, they're still always surprised and amused by it.

most people dont want to see a movie knowing that it sucks

as for my first time, 2 friends of mine just told me i had to see the movie
they didnt tell me why, the title "the room" made me think i was gonna see some horror film like saw or something, and as soon as tommy wiseu spoke i was like hypnotized

reply

I thought it was a horror movie looking at his uneven eyed face on the cover. I can't imagine seeing that face on a billboard.

As much as I hate to spoil the classic scene, I usually show people the YouTube clip of the "flower shop" scene. Then I say "Imagine that for a whole movie", while emphasizing how fascinatingly bad the film is.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

There's nothing you can say to adequately prepare them for it. You can tell them it's the worst movie ever made, and they nod their heads but they are not prepared. You can compare it to Ed Wood's oeuvre and they think they are prepared, but they are not.

But if you point them to a few Youtube clips they start to get the idea.

Three of my students asked me if I'd ever seen the worst movie ever made. I said yes, thinking I've seen Plan 9, Mars Needs Women, Reefer Madness, and many others that would fit that bill. (Meanwhile, I silently amended their question to "worst English-language movie," because -obvious- ). They told me a little bit about The Room, and next week they brought in the DVD. That's all it took.

But your question makes me curious. How were YOU incited to watch this, back when you were a Room virgin?
