Sad
I saw this movie on 11/24/07. It made me sad. It made me sad that the Director, John Turturro, tried to copycat Dennis Potter's "The Singing Detective," and failed so miserably. It made me sad to find out that James Gandolfini has no range -- he really is Tony Soprano. It made me sad to watch Susan Sarandon try to keep up with Janis Joplin's singing. It made me sad to know that Christopher Walken has to take bit parts like this just to keep his finger in show business. It made me sad to watch nepotism -- Aida Turturro has about as much going for her as the average man on the street, but because of her connections, she gets cast -- and it's not only her averageness that's a problem, it's also the fact that she's a distraction -- it's bad enough that JG reminds everyone of Tony Soprano without having AT around to remind everyone of Tony's sister. It made me sad to listen to the second class music (OK, OK, some of it is first class) and watch the second class acting, singing, dancing, and choreography on the parts of the seconds (cops, garbage collectors, etc.). Enough already. Look -- if you've seen the BBC production of The Singing Detective, your expectations are set too high, so take a pass on this one, or you will be sad, too.
