As I understand it, Saiyuki: The Journey West (Anime) is based upon the Chinese Legend "Hsi Yu Chi", the story of Monkey King Gouku, who goes on a quest to obtain seven crystal balls that will allow him to gain a wish from a dragon. He fights with an expandable rod and flies around on a cloud. Dragon Ball is also, of course, loosely based around this legend. I would imagine that Saiyuki may indeed be a written account of the legend, but I am not sure.

the journey to the west, or Monkey King is not about goku finding 7 balls to make a wish. That would be Dragon Ball which was somewhat based on the journey to the west. Journey to the west was about a chinese monk traveling to india to get some buddhist sutras. In the lendend, there was the mokey king, the monk, the pig, and a cannibal. they travel to the land of the buddha and had to go through 80 something trials. I don't know about the reference to saiyuki . i'm watching it right now. I haven't seen anything about it, besides the monk with goku's rod.
