A flawless film, best Indy of 2005

You will either love or hate this haunting, Memento-esqe film, but not for any flaws inherent in it. Courtney Cox proves herself a more than capable actor, as does every member of the cast; the photography and editing are first-rate, and reflect some of 2005's best cinematic moments; and the story's internal logic (twisted as it MUST be) never contradicts itself. I almost never consider a film flawless, or a 10, but November is both.

Director Greg Harrison comes from the editing side of the film industry, and his experience shows. November tells a complicated (by definition) story, and 9 out 10 director-editors would have bungled the job. The writer, Benjamin Brand, taught college level photography; his familiarity with the camera informs his script, intersecting well with Harrision's abilities. These guys have a roster of pro consultants on hand, too, like David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) and Josh Lowden at Skywalker. And unlike most low-budget film-makers, they pay as much attention to the film's sound design as they do to lighting and setting.

Did I say low-budget? I had no clue about that until I listened to the DVD commentary (as much fun as the movie itself) after the second viewing. Doesn't look low-budget to me.

November will not offer you many Hollywood style feel-good moments, tidy moral resolutions, or satisfying happy endings, and if you need these things to stay engaged or walk away satisfied, don't rent this film. November WILL deliver a real psychological mystery, brilliant in its execution, as it plunges the depths of human guilt, sorrow, and the inevitability of death.

P.S. Not to mention that Lew Baldwin's dark musical score is morbidly delicious.

i beg to differ.
I had high hopes for that film, saw the dvd yesterday an i was quite disappointed.

i think it was actually pure stupidity to NAME the chapters.
because after reading "denial", i immediately thought about homer simpson having explained his dying stages ("denial", "anger", "despair" and "acceptance") by dr. Hibbert after eating fugu!
it even became more clear to me when the following chapters *really* were named "despair" and "acceptance"! D'OH!

so after the first couple of minutes it was perfectly clear to me that she was
a) actually the one who was dying and
b) merely contemplating "what if?" versions.

this ruined the film for me because i actually quite liked it's acting, design and sounddesign.

...Is it really possible to hate a film that is flawless or for a film to be considered flawless if there remains the possibility of it being hated?

Just pondering. :)

I fail to see why anyone think this movie is anything like "Memento"
Please explain.
If anything I would say it's resembles Jacob's Ladder more than anything else.

....but did she die, did he die. What was all of that nonesense about there not being a third body. His shoulder wound was an implausible cause of death.
Her's in the stomach could have been, but again not likely.
Too much jumping around. It became exhausting after while.
Thank God, it was only an hour and fifteen minutes.

I don't really understand the descriptions of the film as brilliant. It wasn't terrible, but brilliant is a little off. Comparison to the sixth sense makes more sense than memento. I am learning more and more that if a film has a 'sundance' something or other award symbol on the cover, it is probably an ok film only.

I agree with you 100%

Flawless,10/10

I guess it takes a very clear eye to distinguish all that.
What amazes me is that if you visit rotten tomatoes not a single film critic has written a nice word about this film.

Please do give your post as it is for a comment on this film's comments on imdb.
It is brilliantly true.

I didn't see memento but I was really stunned at such a quality film. This film is a definite recommend. I think a LOT of the reviwers missed what was REALLY going on. Their loss.

Memento-esqe ? I guess so, but this time it just didn't work.

Strange, because I love all the things this movie tried to be, but I found myself getting up and washing the dishes about 1/3 of the way through.
I'd give it an honest 4-5. It just didn't work. For me , anyway.

I did love the "look" of the film. I am not at all surprised it was low-budget.
