Where is the Ring reference

I heard someone mention that there was a scene taken directly from/ripped off/imitated/based upon the Ring or Ringu (cant remember which one) so can anyone tell me where this was.

The fact that Kayoko has long hair might be mistaken as being ripped off from the ring, the only other thing I can think of is the scene where the director is watching the video tape and Kayoko's face appears instead of Kyoko's.

Many Asian horrors have a female ghost character with long black hair that covers her eyes, it's kinda the Japanese equivalent of the carving knife and white mask horror movie villians of western slasher movies.

The white dress and long unkempt hair are a traditional symbol used to allow the audience to know the person is a ghost. In Japanese stage productions, if a cast member came on stage in a long haired wig that was unkept, and they had a white dress on, the audience would know the person was a ghost...

Ju-On and Ringu did not create or copy the ghostly image. They are only showing the audience an accepted form for a ghost.

Well (this is pretty loose) in the Ring NOVELS, Sadako is reborn into human form. So maybe that's what this one and that one have in common.

Why does Sadako hate?

reply

It's a creepy thought. There is a strong chance that is where Mr. Shimizu got the idea from a Ringu book, but it may have been other source too... I haven't seen the Ringu movies (or read the books) but if it wasn't used in the movies, then I don't see how Ju-On The Grudge 2 is ripping it off...

Oh no, a traditional Asian ghost! Copy cat movie! Ok, how many cowboy movies have cowboys with hats, chaps and spurs on? So why is it problematic for some people that Asian ghost movies have Asian ghosts?

reply

Because it's Un-American.

LOL

unless... you were serious...

If I were serious I'd either be an idiot or a complete jerk. So I was kidding instead.

I figured that you were having fun with that scary comment.

reply

Lol, yeah.

As well as what those dudes said, a big part of the Ring series is the fact that they spend a lot of time looking at video, where the ghost appears. In this movie there is a scene where the dude is looking at the video and the ghost appears and seems to come towards the screen. That's a bit like what happened in The Ring.

Also, the way the ghost climbs out of the stain is a little bit like the way the Ring ghost climbs out of er, things (I don't want to spoil anyone who hasn't seen The Ring movies.

The way the ghost moves along the floor is a bit like the way the Ring ghost moves.

But although there are a few similarities, they are very very tiny. As someone suggested, apparantly all the ghosts in Japan are a bit like the Ring and the Grudge ghosts.

The other ringu esque bit i noticed was towards the end, kyoko is looking up at "kayako" and the hiar falls down over her face as usual but 1 of her eyes is more visible al ot like the dvd cover for ringu......also is it just me or did kayako look like she was blakc and white fuzzy like a tv screen when she was climbing out of the stain??

When I first saw Kayako, I thought she looked a lot like Samara.
Also, I remember a part from "The Grudge," when Kayako appeared in the security camera, walking down the hall as the image started to flicker and stuff - that reminded me of when Samara/Sadako walked toward the screen on the television to get Noah/Ryuji.
And the way Sadako walks and widens her eyes is the same way Kayako does.
